Lately I've been hungry about 20-30 minutes before I hit the sack. I'm wondering what a good choice would be before bed, if I'm hungry. Lately it's been 2 TSP Natural peanut Butter with a whole apple (sliced up... mmmm.) or cottage cheese with some freshly sliced fruit, or some grapes. I try to stay away from complex carbs like cereals, bread, etc... what do you guys think? At the gym I've been cutting/building strength with lean muscle gains. I guess on this site it's considered the "progressive" path.

Thanks in advance!

btw, sorry about the subject... snake = snack :) My columbian Red tailed Boa recently died, so I've been pretty bummed about it... :surprised:

sorry to hear bout the snake..

important thing is to have a high protein, low carb snack before bed. the carbs will just be stored as fat, as you wont use the energy when you are sleeping. casein protein is what you want, as it is slow burning across the night. im the same as you, usually cottage cheese before bed. egg whites, glass of milk, couple slices of low fat cheese, some lean meat..

I had a red tail boa in my earlier years, as well as a burmese and a burmese green...then my fave was a Tagu lizard...he was mean.

Oh sorry you meant snack...not snake. Well I get a protein shake before bed...with either milk or water...usually dependant on my calorie intake that day.

I agree with the casein... because it forms something similar to a gell (or so I'm told.. heh) and just kinda of sneaks it's way through your system as a slow pace allowing your body to absorb the goods.

So I'm taking it that my ultra tasty tradition of eating an apple with some natural peanut butter would be better served in the mid morning as a snack, as opposed to a midnight snack :) Good to know.

Thanks guys!

cottage cheese is a nice before bed meal, with ground flaxseeds or walnuts in it.

It contains casein, for prolonged absorption, along with some whey for immediate absorption. the flaxseeds gice you some healthy fats and fiber, which also helps draw out the absorption time.

Otherwise a mixed protein shake - one that has casein and whey in it with few carbs, you could add some ground flaxseeds to that, also.
