Work them like any other muscle, with resistance, good nutrition and rest. No real secret, no magic exercises. Some exercises are of course better than others, upper pulley cable crunches, weighted crunches, weighted leg raises, etc. The idea is to use weight to work them to develope the muscle like you would any other. Twice, three times per week max.

I wanted to ask you guys a question about abs. I read somewhere the other day it might have been on here or in a magazine or something. I've always done my scrunches with my hands behind my head and my legs bent with feet flat on the floor. I think it was prevention magazine or something like that said you should always lay flat on your back, bend your knees to where your feet are right beside your rear end, and always keep your hands on your waist to lift up, never put them behind your neck because all you'll do is strain your neck instead of working your abs. Is that true? And did I read that on here or was that in my magazine ? hehehe I have a short term memory but it's only short term on some things. ;) hehehe

If you pull with your hands you will. Many people pull their neck in an effort to help with the crunch, not realizing that they are doing it. You should start with your hands across the chest. Later you can put your hands behind your head to add a greater degree of dfficulty. Better yet, I find that if I put my hands right by my ears (like I am covering my ears) it adds the difficulty without having the tendency to pull at my neck. I had a sore neck for several weeks and couldn't figure it out. Sure enough that was the problem. With that adjustment I eliminated my problem.

Try putting a weight on your chest, and crossing your arms over it. This will add resistance, and also prevent the neck pulling. Agamble is exactly correct in his analysis of folks pulling with their hands in an attempt to help out, be it unconciously.
