Ok - what are some good ideas to practice when dining out - I know you can substitute butter and sour cream for a potato by using a fat free dressing which works. Just wondering what some of you do when going out other than cutting back on other meals before going and working out harder the next day stuff....just we all have functions that rely on going to a restaurant etc...sooo..........name the good tips/suggestions

dont eat out...
okay, just kidding, but it does make things a little easier (LOL)!

drink lots of water (volume). you dont have to eat your whole meal at one sitting, so separate your portions early and get a doggy bag; ask for ALL toppings on the side (salad, potatoes, etc.); egg whites instead of whole eggs; ask for baked instead of fried, in fact, no deep fried anything; stick to non-breaded chicken breasts, lean cuts of steak, etc.; steamed veggies vs. anything else; stay away from creams, gravies, and sauces; dab your breads and meats with a napkin to remove excess oil. most respectable resturants will also vary the cooking style of your order to suite your needs as well.

hope that helps.........

This is my trick; eat only half of whatever you order, just waste the other half or give it away. If you have a partner you can share/split the meals, this cuts the cost too.

Agree with Intruder, eat half of it. It's difficult to do but, necessary. Having a huge glass of water just before you eat helps too. I've heard of ppl telling the server they want half there meal doggy bagged at the time they order their meal. I love to eat out myself and it's a very tempting atmosphere to eat the entire serving. lol
Good luck with that!

Actually the spliting of dinner is something I do...do!
Generally they serve waaaaaaaaaay too much and you find that spliting is more than enough! I seen on t.v. how the portions in the US are much larger than other countries...anyway...no wonder why obesity is on the rise....then they megasize at the fast food restaurants....yep..that's healthy! :O)

All of the above!
I even cancel the starches all together, and replace them with a few grilled or broiled shrimp (without the butter)
and pay xtra. I still feel satisfied after and more protien!

Ask for all sauces/dressings on the side or not at all. I ask the waitress to not serve the veggies with my meal unless they are steamed no butter. When the waitress comes to the table with the Bread Basket we generally tell her/him thanks but we will not need Bread before our meal. And ditto to all above.

Try not to go out feeling absolutely famished--Have a veggie type snack a little before you go so that you won't jump into your food like it's the last meal you'll ever have. Also, on rare occasions, go out just for dessert, share something absolutely decadent with a friend. I find that a real treat once in a while keeps me out of the junk at home and at the grocery store.

I, personally, drink tons of water. It fills you up a little and also helps your body breakdown and metabolize the fats.
I look for very minimalist things on the menu. The longer the description, the more likely I am to pass it up. Most restaurants will have a grilled chicken in a wine sauce or olive oil sauce or something like that. Anything with the word 'creamy' in the description is out.

Agree with mackfactor, the water thing does help. It's very temporary (the "full" feeling) but, it does curtail the appetite a bit which is very helpful when a huge portion is sitting in front of you. lol

When I order a salad, I ask for the dressing on the side (I usually get the low fat kind, if they don't have that, then I have them bring me oil and vinegar)

Instead of a potato and vegetables, I always ask if I can have double vegetables (most restaurants have no problem with that)

If I get an alcoholic beverage, it's lite beer or wine, and I always order a glass of water with it.

I eat a lot of chicken (chicken breast grilled or broiled, hot wings)and seafood (tuna, salmon, swordfish broiled/grilled)

If I go out to breakfast, I order egg substitue instead of real eggs. You get the same nutrition, but less calories.

Usually I never eat the bread, and if I do, no butter on it.

When having pasta, I always try to get the whole wheat kind. Tomato based sauces have the least calories.

I eat Japanese (sushi) alot. Lots of nutrition, and low in calories.
