I'd like to work that into my workout routine, water aerobics, I have this HUGE underground pool and haven't put my little toe in it yet this year. Last year I got my kids to come out and we made up some exercises, maybe this year I can actually find out what would work best. You got any ideas, Tim?

You know, I only did it once... basically we jogged in the water non-stop and did a lot of arm raising using the water for resistance... I'm sure there is some info about it on the net somewhere...!

I love swimming after a workout. I used to do that when I belonged to a gym that had a pool. I never took classes or anything, but I would do laps until I was completely pooped and then I would move my arms as fast as possible while holding my hands as paddle-like (for more resistance) as I could and do that in motions that would resemble a butterfly motion or a side lateral raises or front lateral raises. The cool thing is that on the way back you are working the opposite muscles and I just felt like it really helped to cut me up and use more muscle fibers than I could usually bring into my normal routine.
I could just be stupid though too. :(

Kathyrn, My mother-in-law takes a noodle and goes to the deep end and just treds water trying to stay afloat. My pregnant wife swims laps. I spend the whole time throwing my five year old from the shallow to the deep..lol

Swimming laps and even treading water for an extended period of time are both great forms of cardio. For any advanced swimmers, the best type of stroke that gets every muscle and exerts the most energy is the butterfly stroke. You exert about 2 times as much energy as the freestyle stroke and almost 3 times as much enerty as the breaststroke.
