I just started the weight training and nutrition and I got that pretty much figured out, but what is the best cardio workout to do and for how long. I don't have any home machines and all I know to do is walk around the block and use my home stairs to step up and down on. I have also heard that jumping rope is good too. Also, how many days a week should I do cardio and should I do it on the same days as lifting, which is 3 days right now?

ok, don't wanna sound like an idiot here, but i am completely new to any cardio things. this HIIT thing, can you break it down more simply, i mean like is this broken into 1 min segments or like is it 5 min segments...example....say, like in 20 mins, do i change a pace every min or every 5 mins. i am trying to keep the everything on a schedule till i get better at this and set my own schedule. sorry if i sound stupid about what your saying, but its new to me.

Hey RW, now I have a question about this. By the time I do the light jog and then faster jog for 1 minute, I AM gasping for air through the next minute. Should I skip the faster jog, or slow the entire process down? I haven't run in years and can walk pretty fast. The first time I did the HIIT, I did only the light jog and even then I skipped the last time as I was totally breathless. I have worked up to being able to do the faster jog 2 or 3 times, but like I said I am gasping for air each time. Any suggestions?

Don't mean to but in here, but if necessary, what I do is make my active rest a bit longer. For instance, on the recumbent bike, I may choose the fat burning program. I will start out at level 5. Do this for 3 minutes, then when the "hills" start, they are 15 second segments. I will take the first one at level 7, the second at level 8, the third at level 9, then drop back to level 5 for active rest till the next set of hills comes up. The next set of hills I will start at level 8, then 9, then 10, for those 3 segments. Getting pretty whipped here, so I may take a longer active rest period of level 5 between the next set of hills. Hope this makes sense. There is no real set low/high time with this, you make the decisions. You have to build up to cardio like that like you have to build up in weights. Takes time, but you can do it.

Thanks guys, I felt like I was cheating if I took a longer rest, or didn't do it exactly as written, although sometimes I had to. This helps a lot.
