what types of workouts to do?

hey everybody. im totally new here. i am 18 and male and im trying to get lean. i have never really exercised or weight trained. i was wondering if someone could give me some advice on where to start. i got a membership at the Y and i plan on starting tomorrow. im really not fat but i have a spare tire that i really want to get rid of. i changed my diet a month ago and im eating and feeling great....but i want to start the exercise to actually get lean. any suggestions on where to start? thanks.

Set up an exercise program here, print it out and take each day with you to the gym.. makes things so easy!

If you find certain exercises that aren't available to you, use the fitness resources at top to look through the list of exercises for that muscle group and substitute as needed.

There are some great tools here to get you on the road to your goals... Have Fun!

And be sure to learn the right way to do thoses exercises. I see a lot of people at my gym that doesn't really know.

I am a very big fan of the MAX OT training style I have seen amazing gains
You could summarize Max-OT like this:

1. Each workout should last approximately 30 to 40 minutes.
2. Train only 1 or 2 muscle groups per workout/day.
3. Do 6 to 9 total heavy sets per muscle group.
4. Do 4 to 6 reps per set.
5. Rest 2 to 3 minutes between sets. (STR)
6. Train each muscle group once every 5 to 7 days. (ITR)
7. Take a 1 week break from training every 8 to 10 weeks.

willywig, thats an interesting routine, thanks for the post.

I am a big fan of the BFL program for beginners, it's a more lifestyle oriented approach as well as a good way to train your "mind" for a new lifestyle. That being said, beginners get terrific results initally as long as they are consistant with thier diet and exercise / cardio,

I've said it before and ill say it again..... consistancy is KEY regardless of the routine. At some point you learn to listen to your body and forget about counting reps and sets, until then consistantly going back to a predefined routine is essintial to getting results.

Hey! i am a teen tryin to lose wight wit my sis over the summer while we got the chance. i have a problem with my thighs, they are too big, and I HATE THEM, i am even begining to get strech marks. i was wondering, what types of workouts can i do @ home w/o any equipment to reduce the size of my thighs? thanx in advance! :love:xoxo
