What is wheat germ and what role might it play in a diet constructed for weight loss? Thanks!

Wheat Germ (in my understanding) is the the portion of the wheat that is not used for making flour. I believe it is like the chafe or outer husk of the wheat. It's high in vitamin E. I mix in my post workout smoothie. Vitamin E acts as an anti-inflamitory which (to my experience) helps the recovery of damaged muscle tissue after lifting. Personally, I can tell the difference from one day to the next if I take the extra Vitamin E from Wheat Germ. I feel less pain. I'm sure your could get the same results from taking a vitamin E supplament, but I don't like taking a bunch of extra pills. Besides, I believe extra vitamins are absorbed and utilized quicker and easier if consumed as food instead of pill form.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, this is what I've gleaned from read various health magazines and publications.

The most important part of vitamin e is if you buy the pills is to get the d alpha(natural e) the dl alpha is synthetic and not as easily bioavailable.

Ah, yes, that is true. But wheat germ is only one source of vitamin E. Avacado is another and olive oil. I think that's why people tend to take the pill for more, because to get enough of the d alpha you would have to consume high amounts of rather high fat/caloric foods. (though good fat, I know)

Wheat Germ is nutrient rich and a great source of Vitamin E and Folic Acid, with the added value of Phosphorous, Iron, Potassium, Copper & Magnesium. Great fiber also,can be used to slow digestion if needed. I prefer flax meal, its nutritent profile is astounding.

how does flax meal taste? Is it as hard to get down as the oil?

Not at all, and a great sub for folks who can't stand flax oil. Has a kind of nutty taste. I like the Barleans brand. Called Forti-flax.

How do you eat flax meal? Is it a stand alone food or an additive?

You can use it both ways. I sprinkle it on cottage cheese, sometimes just take a spoonful by itself. You can sprinkle it on salads. I particularly use it to slow digestion in my daytime and nightime protein shakes. My wife hates flax, and she can use this. She mixes it in her yogurt and loves it.(it is the only way I can get her to get her fats!!:))
