I was wondering if it would work if i focus one week on upper body and back( excluding abs) and the alternating week on abs and lower body? Say if i did upper body and back 5 days a week in week 1, and then i did abs and lower body 5 days in week 2 would i lose muscle i gained in week one and would this affect my gains in week two?

I don't think that this is a good idea at all. you need to let your body recover from the workouts that you did. If you continue to lift day after day the same body parts, you will not see much gains. Try using the fitness plans at the top of the page. just fill out the profile and your goals. Those workouts work with proper nutrition.

I meant i would do upper arms monday, shoulders tuesday etc and finish upper body(except abs) by friday. Then i would rest two days and start abs monday, hips tuesday etc and finish lower body by friday. Then rest two more days and go back to step one.

This depends on how quickly you recover...that's a good idea if you often experience DOMS...so that increasing training cycle from lets say 7 days to 10 days might be a good idea....however this is probably something you would try after 1-2 years of training...I wouldn't do it as a beginner/intermediate to weight lifting....you also need to lift heavier and with more intensity for this training cycle to be appropriate....

stick to just a normal 4-5 body split on a 7 day training cycle with 2-3 days spaced out of rest....
