Hello.
I'm starting a workout program with a friend and, though I've been active most of my life, have never seriously lifted for the purpose of gaining muscle mass. I'm wondering how I know what weight to start at. As far as I know, you're supposed lift more with each set. Does that mean my first set should be reletively light and easy, or would that be cheating myself? On the other hand, I don't want to start to heavy, then not be able to finish the rest of my sets. How do I find the perfect balance?

If you are doing the mass prgrm from here, which consists of 4 sets on most of the exersises, the first set is a warm up set. Do this with a light weight and make sure you have the proper movement and form. As for the balance of the sets, the desired weight would be one that would let you complete the sets in good form and give you some resistance at the last 3 reps. Don't over do it and you will see good results. Good Luck.
