In a situation where one would like to build mass (mostly lean muscle) and build strength with the help of a supplement would you guys recomend creatine or whey protein. I know both help in different ways but if you had to pick one which would it be? It would be ideal to take both but I'm asking because supplements aren't the cheapest things in the world and I could afford either one or the other. Thanks=)

Protein bars are ok as long as you realize all protein bars aren't created equal. Check the label and as someone said the other day, if there's something there that ends in 'tose, you're possibly getting a lot more sugar than you think.

Go for the protien and look carefully at the numbers.

Why do you say look carefully at the number carivan. I know this is probally a stupid question but Im just starting to get into weightlifting so I assume you are talking about how much of something it has?

Rebfootball....not a stupid question at all. Supplement companies are all out there to make $$$. I've seen powders as low as 12grams of protien per scoop. That would not be to beneficial for you or I , as we would be going through the stuff pretty fast. The higher the number the better.
Also very important is the amount of carbs and fat. Most people are trying to keep bodyfat down, so we want those numbers as low as possible. One more thing, the serving of protien per scoop should be 75% or more per scoop. If it is not there are a lot of fillers in it,and we are wasting $$. You may want to choose a whey protien.
Hope this helps.

I recommend whey protein. Gets absorbed fast so take it as a post work-out drink or take half before and half after. It contains 2g fat, 4g carb, 2g Sugars and 20g protein per scoop (this is the one I'm currently taking). Most brands are in the same ballpark. Hope this helps

Hello,
Please forgive me if I ask: have you guys ever been concerned about the creatine intakes? As many of you already know, in some country creatine substances are illigal for health reason.
I don't intend to offed anyone here, it’s me that I never pushed my self to “take the chance”.

Every country is diiferent. I am not a person of legal authority, but creatine is found naturally in foods that we eat. It is one of the few products permitted for athletes in the Olympic Games. Just out of curiosity, where is it ilegal?
Oh, heres something strange about vitamins....Here in Canada, it is ilegal for a protien manufacturer to combine vitamins in the same container as the protien powder. So, go figure that one out!

Today I went out and bought some Mega Whey from GNC and it tasted really bad. I mixed it with water and it is strawberry flavored, what else can I mix it with? Anything?

I take strawberry flavored Myoplex, which is a meal replacement. I mix it with milk and a banana. By itself it's so so, but the banana really makes it tastes much better. You can try pouring the milk, the protein, and cutting up the banana and throwing it in a blender. Hope that helps.

ok chris and mrmagical I will try both of those. I take weightlifting as a class and I was thinking about drinking the whey stuff during breakfast and then creatine after I lift. Will that be fine? Or should I drink the whey before I lift?

Take your protien everyday, I take it 2-3 times a day even on off days. On training day I have b4 and after.
The creatine should also be taken b4 and after for better effect.
Hope this helps.

Hi everyone! I take creatine and Designer Protein whey powder. I love the combo! I don`t mind the taste, I tried Strawberry and Chocolate just with water. Just a note: anyone else notice a big difference in the brands of creatine? I had creatine(phosphagen)by EAS, now I have a brand supplied by a canadian store (Old Fashion Foods)it seems not as good. It is a very noticeable difference! it says its 100% creatine!

That's a good question. It's better to ask than to assume that it's okay because the FDA hasn't cut it off . . . yet.
Creatine is one of the most studied, longest lived supplements on the market. The results are overwhelming - it does work and it is safe . . . under regular circumstances. A friend told me a story about two high school wrestlers that died while taking it. Why? They were uneducated. As wrestlers they were trying to lose weight to fit into their weight class. Many wrestlers do this by dehydrating themselves. Creatine uses your body's water to hyperhydrate your muscles. The label specifically says to drink a lot of water (I think you know what comes next). Because the two boys were dehydrating themselves AND taking creatine - the creatine was pulling the water from their bodies and putting it in their muscles, but away from vital organs. I imagine they probably showed symptoms of extreme dehydration but ignored them.
Creatine is very safe, so long as you're not completely irresponsible.

You take 15g of creatine a day? Fair enough, it's your money you're wasting . . .

I take my protien shake N Large 2, with two scoops, and mix it with 1 cup milk, 1 cup Dannon's yogout (fruit on bottom), about 15g of creatine, and a bannana with some ice cubes..and blend it...taste good..and I believe it has alot of Protien

Does protein whey help you to lose weight? When should you take it? Any help on this matter of weight loss would be appreciated.

I would never take creatine because it seems pretty dangerous, especially migo's story. I have purchased designer whey protein, I like it very much, great taste and there are so much benefits that go with it. Trust Me on it.

Creatine is perfectly safe...I have been taking it continuously for over 3 years now and it's perfectly safe....there's absolutely not 1 study that proved it dangerous in healthy persons to begin with......just because 2 dumb people misused a supplement doesn't mean it's dangerous....

Next will be discussing how dangerous tylenol or aspirin is because some idiot swallowed a whole bottle and died....well no sh&t sherlock if it says no more than 2 tablets x times a day and with a bunch of warnings....then do what it says....

Most supplements are useless but not dangerous....It's stupidity/ignorance that's dangerous.....

Creatine is found in everything you eat that contains protein. Think its dangerous? Better put down that steak. Chicken, tuna, even your whey protein shake are out of the question. Matter of fact, I think I remember hearing that water is dangerous.

If you can afford to buy enough food to satisfy your protein needs, then you don't need supplements. But a lot of times such as in my case it easier to get your needs in and it is also cheaper for me to drink my whey protein shakes. I use Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey. I get it very cheap online. It's also very low in carbs which helps with keeping trim. Creatine can be ok if you use it properly. :)

Be aware, whey protien is fast acting, and thus faster amino acid oxidation. Hunger comes quick as gastric emptying is hurried. This may in fact lead to more calorie intake. I would suggest a casein protein or at the very least a blend throughout the day if you are going to use any supplement.

Good point bb1fit. I forgot to mention that I usually add a high-glycemic index carb since the whey is fast-acting. I usually add some rice or quaker oats or something. It usually does the job. :) With the casein protein, I like to have a glass of skim milk before I go to bed. It is slower absorbed and helps through the night.

I apologize for being uneducated, but can you explain "Hunger comes quick as gastric emptying is hurried." in moron terms?

Are you saying that casein protein should be taken with whey protein, or a person should take casein protein instead of whey protein?

Firstly the best protein powder doesnt exsist, it will totally depend on your goals and how well you have the rest of your nutrition worked out. A protiein shake will not make you fat if your smart about it. If you have a slow metabolism and your downing a 1000 calorie shake after you just stuffed down sum maccas and sum fatty steaks it will make you fat but it wont be because of the protein it will be because you didn't fit it into your diet(hope maccas isnt in your diet by the way).

Hey, i'm just starting weightlifting and was wondering what would be the best supplement to increase my mass, as i am fairly tall and kinda skinny.

If you are just starting the best supplements will be lots of clean food and iron (weights). Do not worry about the supplements. Good luck and welcome to FT.
