The fitness plan I was given here says that I should do wide grip machine pulldowns and that you pull them to the front. I did that today and noticed that my chest seemed to be getting a better workout than my upper back. I then noticed a sign at my gym that says you pull down behind your head.
So which should I be doing to better target my upper back?

both will target the upper back, but stick with the ones to the front. the ones behind your head put alot of strain on your rotator cuffs, and are very dangerous if not executed perfectly.. you will get similiar results by doing it to the front.

Pull back at a bit of an angle, and flex your back up towards the bar as you pull it down.

Concentrate on squeezing your shoulderblades towards each other. I found that helped with my form.

I've read this from someone here on FT and it helped me alot. I'm not taking any credit for it.
"Imagine someone touching the very center of your back, and imagine squeezing there hand with your shoulder blades."
If you concentrate on the form you should really feel the burn.

bmellis you can pull behind your head but that puts you at a greater risk of injury due to shoulder positioning.
