If one wanted to develop width in his shoulders, what excercises would be best for doing so?

Front and side lateral raises, arnold presses, seated presses.
Remember to keep proper form and don't go too heavy on the laterals.
And don't foreget to work your back to get the V look for the girls!

Ok, I'll try and describe how an Arnold press is done.
Perhaps there is another name for it that someone else will know.

These are done like a seated shoulder press, but when the biceps are paralell to the floor, we bring our forearms together in front of us.
it is a 4 part movement. Up, down, in, backout, up, down in.
Hope I described it ok.

This description came from the Health Resources on this site. there is also a picture.

1. You may be in a seated or standing position during this exercise. Grab a dumbbell in each hand and bring the weights curled up directly in front of your shoulders with your elbows at your sides. Be sure that your palms are turned towards you.
2. Slowly push the dumbbells directly above your shoulders while turning your palms out as your reach the top of the movement.
3. Push the dumbbells to the point where your elbows almost lock out.
4. Lower the weights in the reverse manner, ending the movement with your palms facing you and the weights by your shoulders.

The phrase "no pain, no gain" is only a myth. There are trained athletes that don't feel pain from exercise.
Good luck with the exercises and let us know how you succeed.

For overall shoulder development try doing

Push&Press - a great olympic movement for developing shoulders while also stressing core

Sitting/Standing Shoulder presses with Barbell for mass and Dumbells for tie ins and separations

For great emphasis I would also do Barbell/DB front raises
as well as Laterall DB raises and Reverse Pec Dec Flye reverse machine

Also try to do Power/Hanging Cleans for strengthening overall shoulder joint....

I would do cycles first I would strengthen your current muscles
then I would work on mass gains and finalyl to strengthening your new muscles....

if you want more info just email me...later

I have used a sick work out from abc body building website called the animalistic shoulder blitz. Should you surivive the 8 weeks you will see allot of growth.
