I am sure you hear this a lot but my schedule is very tight. I work about 60 hours a week and my diet has been garbage! I don't have time to cook the food I should be eating. For the longest time I have been living on a lot of fast food. For the last 2 weeks I have had nothing but subway and goodcents. Mostly turkey sandwiches and a few steak sandwiches and of course all of the veggies and double meat. I understand positive gains have a lot to do with my diet. Can I keep eating like this or is this going to hurt me?

fill out your profile.

Sandwiches aren't necessarily garbage. Order them on whole wheat (which I doubt if they have 100% whole wheat, but if they do, awesome), as you said, extra meat, lots of veggies, a little oil dressing.

You could also order big salads with extra chicken breast or steak.

Wendy's has baked potatoes and salads and their chili isn't so bad, if you need a switch from sandwiches. Just order the potato plain and double the meat in the salad or add a small chili.

On the other hand, if you are serious about results, you will find the time to cook a large pot of rice, a slew of chicken breasts and some veggies, divide them into tupperware and eat that instead.

It is all about what your priorities are.

I thought I did fill out my profile...please advise.

Thanks for the insite! I was really worried that eating that way would have negative effects. You are right, I could probably find some time to "cook a large pot of rice, a slew of chicken breasts and some veggies, divide them into tupperware and eat that instead." I guess it is a priority thing. But working 60 hours a week, fitting 5 days of working out, maintaining my social life about 2 days a week, and still trying to find time to sleep is tough. But I will work on it. Thanks asimmer.

Just a thought...but working out 5 days a week may not be necessary. I workout 3 days a week and try to get in a jog or a hike or something physical another day and it's more then enough for me (mow the yard once a week as well). Look at how long you're spending on your workouts...hour a day/3 days a week is sufficient for weights, hour and a half if you are trying to fit cardio in there as well. Especially if you're a beginner.

If you could arrange your workout to be more effective to make sure you're using that time wisely then you might be able to buy yourself another day or two during the week, which would be more then enough time to cook you up some lunches and dinners for the week.

Trust me. That sounds great! But how would I effectivly work bis, tris, back, shoulders, legs, calves, and abs all in three days? I would have to cram more sets into those days and as it is, I have trouble finishing those sets. At the end of my workouts, my arms or whatever I was working out are at failure. For instance after I have worked out my arms, I can barely lift my arms. Please advise.

Great!

Have you had a look at some of the programs here on FT? You schedule your your w/o days to fit your needs. As it seems that you work long hours, have you thought of maybe working out less than 5 days a week? Maybe you would get better results if you spent more on form and intesity rather than on number of days. Don't forget that your body needs to rest in order to grow. And trust me if you don't get the right food in, you're not going to get what you want!

Hope this helps...

I have looked into the 3 days a week schedule and it is mixing alot of muscle groups. I once heard that it is bad to do that because your muscles won't get enough "attention" because you are spreading the workout too much. Is that not true?

First off you can plan ahead....you can pot borwn/black/wild rice in a rice cooker and have it be done in about an hour...it should last you 1-3 days....set it overnight...most turn off automatically....

yams/potatoes/sweet potatoes also can be cooked in the microwave overnight....

You can grill fish/chicken breasts quiet fast either at night or in the morning....

subway is a decent place to eat...just NO MAYO.....whole wheat/rye bread....no cokes or sodas or chips when u eat there.....wendy's chilly and baked potatoes aren't half bad....I ate thos eon my last trip and they fill you up quite nicely...

3 days is plenty to train the whole body....just choos eright exercises....that is big compound exercises instead of the small isolation exercises.....

Squats
Deadlifts/Power Cleans
Military presses
Rows
Pull Ups/pull Downs/Chin Ups
Incline Bench Press/Dips
Stiff Legged Deadlifts
Shrugs
Standing/Sitting Calf Raises
EZ BAr Curls
Close Grip Flat Bench Press

You can train your whole body with these exercises....and make great gains....2-5 sets each....and go fairly heavy....6-12 reps....failing on last set....

Thanks menace amd everyone else who helped me. I think things will go much better for me lifting only 3 days a week. That will also give me more time to cook so I can eat healthier too. Thanks again!

I have the same issues. Not much time and sitting behind a desk all day makes you gain weight fast.

Nah...I sit behind a desk all day and I'm losing weight with hitting the gym 3 days a week. The only way to lose weight is in the kitchen. It took me weeks to get a handle on my diet when I started...now it's just become 2nd nature when I'm cooking dinner or ordering something at a restaurant. Yesterday I went to a place that is notorious for their Chicken fried steak...and trust me prior to 4 or 5 months ago I put several of them away, but yesterday I ordered just a grilled chicken breast with BBQ sauce on it...it was plenty yummy and filled me up and got me out of the restaurant with the least possible damage (even had some corn bread).

What I would suggest to anyone that has never counted calories before is to take anywhere from 2-3 days up to 2 weeks and track your current diet either here or at www.fitday.com. Then tweak it, make you a sandwich for lunch and see what it does, change up your breakfast, then look at your dinner...then track it for a few more days. The difference in your calorie counts will amaze you and it will teach you what you can eat and what you should be eating.

Their my mates and im with them hal the time so I know xactly what they eat....takeaway,takeaway and takeaway. And they dont use any supplements or steroids. So how come they dnt have to diet?

They are not the norm...I know someone like that as well. Eats fast food for breakfast and lunch and usually a 6 pack of beer in the evenings and a 12 pack a day on weekends. Yet he has a six pack and is well cut even though he hasn't worked out since high school (10 years). Unfortunately for a lot of it is genetics and the majority of us have to work for it. So until they put gene splicing machines in the gym I'll just keep lifting weights and watching my diet.

I would say split your workups up more if you are working out 3x a week. something like Mon-Wed-Fri would be effective.
