After doing HIIT I have been taking a protein supplement drink right after. Should I be taking it with some sort of Carb? Or should I not be taking the protein supplement at all on cardio days?:) |

I wouldn't take the protien. As far as the carbs, if you want to lose fat don't have any, as your body will use your stored fat for energy and thus will help you lose it.If you take in carbs after the cardio, your body will use those, instead of the stored fat. Hope this helps. -------------- To change it, or to create it, simply train it! Ivan |

I'm split on this issue.Cardio does push your body into a catabolic state. If you're worried about muscle growth, you should eat something after cardio. bb1fit posted something about taking BCAA's prior to cardio once, but I can't remember exactly what he said. I, personally, think it is important to get a small dose of carbs and some protein to fight catabolism. I know I've read an article specifically about this, I'll see if I can track it down. -------------- "Don't follow leaders and watch your parking meters!" -- Bob Dylan |

Here is a little bit of info, and exactly what I follow when doing cardio for competitions. So this is when I am even in my leanest state!Performing your cardio work first thing in the AM will "stoke" your metabolism for the rest of the day. This ensures much of your daily calorie intake goes toward muscle recuperation and not fat accumulation. However, performing cardio work on an empty stomach first thing (upon waking) does not "force the body to burn more fat", this is a myth. It does induce muscle breakdown to provide amino acids for fuel during exercise. Performing cardio work in the morning is beneficial, but do not do it on an empty stomach. Perform your cardio sessions intensely to stoke your metabolism, but be sure to bracket these sessions with a protein/carbohydrate supplement. Consuming some form of carbohydrate and protein before and after your cardio sessions will provide the right biochemical environment that minimizes muscle loss. This can be your favorite MRP,or combo protein source of your choice, and a small carb source, high glycemic. This will in no way affect your "fat burn", and in the long rrun will aid it by preserving your fat burnig muscle mass. BCAA's during cardio and immediately following is another way. You may get differences of opinions on this, but don't be fooled by the thought of taking something immediately pre or post cardio will hurt your fat burn. |

Thanks bb1 this makes much more sense...I have been taking a protein supplement with a fruit about 2 hours prior to my cardio workouts but I haven't been taking anything after...Maybe I should start??? Anyway, whatever im doing it is working. I feel stronger, I have more energy and I even lost 1.5 lbs in 4 days...thanks to all of you who have been patient with my questions...:) |

What would be a suggested dosage of both protein/carbo?============ Quoting from bb1fit: You may get differences of opinions on this, but don't be fooled by the thought of taking something immediately pre or post cardio will hurt your fat burn. ============= |

I like a glutamine/protein mix (15gr.) both before and after cardio. Research has shown that glutamine may replenish glycogen stores just as good as a high glycemic carb, without the added calories. Just another example. |

Do you have the link to the article or study you got that info from. I'm still double and triple checking this whole glutamine issue, trying to find a definitive stance.
