i was reading somewhere(i dont remember where) and they were saying that a big part of getting stronger muscles was based upon how strong the opposite of that muscle is. for example...to get a stronger chest, make your back stronger with rows ect. to get your biceps stronger, work to get your triceps stronger...ect.

something to do with your body wont let you become lopsided so to speak (ex massive chest with tiny back) is this true at all??

The lats are used as a stabilizer in the bench press. There for to have a strong chest, you need strong lats. Most antagonist muscles actually work together.

Also, your body will only develop assymetrically so much. Thats why guys that do nothing but curls and bench press don't see good results.

I would go so far as to say that Back is prob the single most important muscle to train. Maybe legs but if you have no back strength you can really do nothing.

ok, thanks for the info. im not sure wht, but back is one of the muscles i have been neglecting mainly because i do back when i do legs and i am tired by the time im done with legs.

i may have to switch leg and back day to leg and shoulder day, and do back on my shoulder bicep day

By back, do you mean upper or lower back? Lower back should be worked with legs, through squats, good mornings, and deadlifts.
Agreed mutt and menace. Posterior chain strength is the single most neglected aspect of strength training.

MRd my friend was making a similar mistake..he trained chest/back, twice a week and rotated the bodypart he did first...problem being that after chest he had no strength to do back and vice versa....he didn't do deadlifts and his strength and muscles gains stagnated badly...so he just now realized something was wrong....

I think back and legs can be trained in a variety of ways

I prefer to train the whole back on a separate day from legs ....but you can do lower back with legs or you can do whole back+hamstrings and glutes/quads/calves on a separate day

I like doing SLDLs on leg day and regular deadlifts on back day....since I have about 10-14 days separating the two bodyparts....I get plenty of rest and can go very heavy....

same here menace.. not so much rest, but the better part of a week between my good mornings and deadlifts. im going to experiment with doing calves on my back day, as by the time i get to them on leg day im too exhausted to do any good. they would be easy to throw in as a superset on back day, or if i really fly through things, a way to just unwind.

Yep, I am a big fan of antagonist muscle workouts. Back is a highly neglected muscle workout, I guess the reason being most folks don't normally "see" it on themselves. Many, espcecially newer trainees train the anterior portion, not realizing that back tie in will equate to functional strength.

It's what I call, "if you can't see it in the mirror while doing bicep curls, its not worth training" syndrome.

We got a new weightlifting coach at our school for a while (ex- denver bronco's and military trainer) and he was really into the antagonist lifts for everything. With his help I was able to make much more significant gains than with what I had been doing under our football coach.
