Hey all, I am wondering if I am the only one..... I don't have access to a gym, and during the day I get really busy with all sorts of stuff (yes, I admit, that proper planning is still in the making, but I am working on it). So come nighttime, I tend to turn on my TV and realize I have not done my weight exercises (I do a lot of dog walking, so cardio is hardly a problem). So I do them in front of my favorite shows. What is your opinion on that? I remember from my gym times years ago, that focussing on your muscles and just paying close attention while weight lifting was a must. Do you think the outcome is different when I do my pushups while Jack Bauer is saving the world?
Just wondering what everyone else thinks/does.

While walking dogs is good excercise...its not "cardio"....to get the efects of cardiovasualar excercise your heart rate has to be higher than 60% I believe and as high as 80%......I highly doubt your heart rate is that high.

How can you say you don't have time for excercise...ifyur sitting in front of the TV? Thats wasted time? Most gyms have tv on tredmills...? Record the shows...in that 1 hour you could of got a real workout...watch them later.

But I guess some is better than none?

Hey BigAndrew!
Thanks for the input. You are correct. My heartrate is for the most part lower than 60%. I do jogging spurts with the dogs, which gets all our heartrates up, but there is no consistent heartrate level between 60 and 80. I also do 5 mile walks with a friend and the dogs on weekends.
The in front of TV does not mean I couch and regret not working out. I actually lift my weights while watching TV, and complete my 4 sets of the training plan I got here. I was just wondering how effective you think I can work with TV distraction.
Thanks!

If you can follow the show then you are not putting enough focus on your routine (in my opinion). I would guess that your form and intensity will suffer. I would record your shows (TIVO is great!!!) and concentrate on your routine. I listen to music during mine and basically can mostly only remember the parts of the songs in between my sets.

I used to hate country until I kept making fun of Keith Urban's song line "Take your cat and leave my sweater". I thought that was so ridiculous, that I would sing it all the time... and then I realized how much I had come to love that song. So hanging my head in shame, yes, I am very fond of the slow Keith Urban songs....I smuggle them into my car in between my Disturbed and Meatllic CD's. The cat and the sweater still crack me up badly, though. What a silly thing to say.

Hi

I dont see how watching tv and lifting is going to be good, how can you get the proper form and intensity you need when you are probably focused else where?

Actually, it works very well. Try it once instead of sitting on the sofa'

Just to make a point-nothing personal intended.

Okay, I took all these little tidbits of info and did my routine without the TV, really focussing on the individual muscles. Turns out, I wasn't able to do as many reps as while watching TV. So I suppose that answers my question..... when I am really focused, I must be working a lot harder...

I have a TV in my weight room. I watch "Little House on the Prairie" because Laura is so hot. No, I'm not a perv 'cause she's almost my age. Michael Landon once said of her "she's so bucktoothed she can eat an apple through a picket fence" . Nice turn of words eh? When her sister goes blind I usually set new PR's because I'm so angry. I also just play the picture with a Barbara Striesand CD because that really pisses me off and I just lift like a demon.

If u can watch tv while working out then u are not working hard...you're on the same level as 2 people talking while going through the motions....half assing the workouts...I used to do that when I started out....the results? not many...very close to zero in fact...after a short adaptation period...I got nothing...what kind of exercises do u do that u can watch tv while working out? and how much weight....this just proves my point that very high percentage of women go way too light....standing there doing endless sets with 5lb of curls and tricep extensions....getting little results....

why not try and do squats, deadlifts, dips, chin ups....db presses, push ups....etc....yes u can pretty much do variations of these exercises at home....can u get a chin up bar?....I suggest u go in to 5-8 rep range....perhaps leave a couple reps in the tank....highly doubt that u'll be able to do these while watching tv...u'll need every ounce of focus u have...

Charlie, this is just plain torture... Little house on the prarie, hahah. You are one funny individual.

Menace, I do 4 sets of reps for a variety of exercises. I have a 9 kg weight bar that I use for biceps curls and squats, because it is convenient. For side laterals I use very small dumbells (1.25 kg), I do pushups (working up to 15 per set with proper form, right now I am at 10 whole ones, and the next ones are from the knee, usually 8-10). I also do tricep dips, crunches, calf raises and chins between chairs with my weight bar for pulling myself up. I am basically following the list that I got from freetrainers for home workout without machines. They suggest 4 sets of 15-15-12-10 reps, which seemed a lot to me, but I am just trying to follow instructions.

Im talking about watching the tube while just working out in general! I luv catching up on sports and news while I am between sets or doing some treadmill on my non- outside days. Watching a little TV may even help you commit to an hour a day instead of only 10-15 minuts?

Rite On! This is also the reason that todays modern gyms have TV's on every wall now.
