hi all,
i have just begun a fitness program which involves high repetition medium weights and around a 1/2 hour of cardio four times a week.
I have a body type which puts on muscle really quickly, I've only been on the program for two weeks and already my shoulders are 'bulking up'. I'm really concerned about the effect the weights are having on my upper body as i have quite broad shoulders.
Is there any way i can incorporate strength training in my workout without looking like the she-hulk...
cheers e x

first, it is impossible for you to look like the she-hulk unless you are on steroids. women simply do not have enough testosterone to bulk up like that. the reason your shoulders are getting bigger isn't because you're building huge amounts of muscle, it's because you haven't lost the fat there yet. any time you build muscle, it's initially going to push the remaining fat out and make you look bigger until it goes away.
second, don't do high repetitions - anything over 15 isn't especially effective. do higher weight and lower reps. you WILL NOT get bulky.
third, keep your diet clean. you can't expect to be in the gym and "tone up" if you're not eating enough calories or the right kind of calories.
i have been lifting weights religiously for 18 months and i have extremely broad shoulders, but they're very lean. if you have broad shoulders, you can't make them more narrow, so work with what you have. lift heavy and eat clean, you will be fine.

I've been lifting weights for more than ten years and I WISH that I had bigger muscles! :(
What is your goal?
If you want to shape yourself a beautiful body, keep your metabolism high and have lots of constant energy, then stop being afraid of "turning into a she Hulk" and keep on fighting the weights!
Try to do some research and you'll see how much you're wrong...

becoming bulky is more related to your diet than your training(ie dramatically boosting your calorie intake along with training)...so like kat said...go with lower reps...
also your broad shoulders are just how your bone structure is...you cannot change that....in fact I wish i had broad shoulders lol....so consider yourself lucky...it's how you carry yourself that truly matters....
