First thing you want to do is find your maintenance calories, that is the amount it takes daily to keep you at your current weight. Do this by weighing yourself today, then keeping track of everything you eat for a week, and I do mean everything. At the end of the week see if you lost or gained. if you did neither, your fairly close to your maintenance calories, which is going to be the average of everything you kept track of for the week. So for examples sake if your total calories for the week was 14,000, your daily maintenance calories would be 2000, to maintain your body weight. Once you know this you can gain or lose whenever you want. To lose simply deduct 200-400 from your daily amount, to gain do the opposite. You of course need to be eating near it already for this to work properly. If your only taking in a 800 calories a day your not gonna get valid results. It mainly comes down to calories in and out. To lose you need to have less in than out. Try to eat as healthy as possible, like Mike mentioned, there are a lot of good ideas in this forum. Check out the thread "grocery list for healthy eating". Have 5-7 smaller meals a day like breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack. This should get you well on your way.
