What do you guys think about writing styles on this board?

My opinion is that I appreciate the smoothness of paragraphs that have capitals at the beginning, periods at the end, and spaces after the period. Also, spaces to separate paragraphs, and as a general rule, a maximum of 4 lines per paragraph.

These things aren't all uppety or too proper as far as I'm concerned. They just help me to fly through a post.

Do you guys have any opinions on this? :cool:

I think the majority of people who post on this board arent expecting to have their papers graded. The only thing that bothers me is when every other word is mispelled.

Remember one thing, we all didn't graduate with "english majors" some have phd's and they are the worst spellers. :big_smile:

There are people posting from all over the world and have different educations etc. Guess we just have to putupwithit!:big_smile:

Periods caps and a little proper structure help me to understand what the person is saying. It doesn't have to be perfect. I go with the null lady on internet slang.:big_smile:

Me too. I learned basic english in school. Sometimes my mind is too fast for my fingers, and I will miss a letter or something. But for the most part, I think all posts should be at least legible, and leave the computer slang. Some correct spelling of simple words would be nice too. I won many spelling contests in school, was always the first one picked for teams, but you don't have to win contests to be able to spell cool, or the, or your. I have always hated the computer slang, reminds me so much of the old CB slang, man did I detest that! (still do!):cool:

I agree with Ogun here. Besides, ensuring proper grammer is just a good habit to get into. It gets easier with practice as well.

The thing I like most about Ogun's style is the paragraph structure and the bulleting/numbering of points. This is what makes it easy to read.

Considering the fact that we have posts from all over the country (world for that matter), from people of all ages and backgrounds. Also, the fact that we communicate fairly well. I'd have to say, "Bravo, public education."

Maybe I'm getting old and out of touch, but I second the sentiment about "on-line" writing. I really do find it hard to read. I'm constantly going back over it trying to get the meaning of the word through how it is used.

I don't mind a structured approach, however having said that i type with both my thumbs....so am quite prepared to overlook spelling errors and dropping the odd vowel to shorten the typing task.

When I was in school many, many moons ago, I opted out of typing class in leiu of machine shop. Who knew that personal computers would be so prevalent today. If you would have told me that about PC's back then I would have called you a liar. Unbelieveable. I made a comfortable living for my family as a machinist. However, it takes me forever to type a post and I often make mistakes. Oh, the sacrifices we make!

When my dad got his first PC I used to ICQ w/ him and it was PAINFUL to watch him eek out a sentence one letter at a time. His e-mail was full of typos. He has a Master's degree in English and taught English for several years. His e-mail has gotten better since he's been typing regularly but he had a terrible time at first. It was truly pitiful.

I taught myself to type using Mavis beacon CD rom. I used to play on IRQ alot(back in the early days of computers:big_smile:), and got tired of having to scroll back to see the message that was previously typed because I could not look at the screen and type at the same time. I now type 80 words per minute. These CD's do work, another is Tying Tutor, which is cooler than Mavis with music and games.:)

Great feedback from everybody.

Well, another neat story,quick as can be:
I failed typing twice in high school circa 1988. But you can't take two years of typing with even marginal effort without learning how! I way typing 50 wpm back then, 65+ now with a couple of mistakes.

The English deal is true; not everybody even speaks this language natively but my problem wasn't so much a misspelled word here or there, but stuff like this:

Ex 1. Ok so i was workin out andthe traner come up and frogged my blogger, three x. no matter, drank water. good! Love my jim!

My brain nearly explodes. I want to understand this person, so I stay and I labor over it, restating it in any of 10,000 possible literal meanings. That time that I'm spending is time I will not be spending reading other posts from you guys. That's the part that bothers me, other than the late not sweats and dreams of naked spelling bees.

But I have a bee phobia anyway :))

Thanks for all yer InPuT FrEnZ!

And thanks for the compliment, csferrie--you're too kind.

I'm definitely with everyone else on this one. I dislike the internet slang. Even though I learned to type through trial and error by slowly starting out when I began on ICQ and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Once I became a little more proficient at typing I moved onto IRC, in which the chat channels forced me to learn quickly. But, I still detest seeing the 'd00d u are so c00l' and crap like that. Now, i happen to abbreviate words like 'Thanks' into 'Thx' every now and then, but thats about it. I'll try to break that habit :)

One thing I would extremely like everyone to understand is that your does not equal you're. That makes me cringe almost every time I see it. But then again, my grandmother beat that one into my head when I was little.

One last thing: Ogun, I was drinking water when I read your last post, and I found it all up in my nose. It sucked.

WOW! I had no idea that you guys would feel like that. Since my days in chat I have replaced "don't" with "dunno" and "what" with "wot".
ya'll = you all
yous = you all
thx = thanks
ty = thank you
yw = your welcome

... I mean, (ehem) you all cannot hear me so wouldn't you like to know what I sound like? ALSO, who has time to write out every stinking word correctly?

If there's one thing I CANNOT handle are the asterisks. *HUGS* :angry:

I think that by the way one types you could JUDGE one's intelligence however, you could also tell how one speaks. All the same, judge not lest ye be judged.

The way one types could be an indicator of 'linguistic intelligance' or, their carelessness. Either way, let's not forget about the other 7 fundamental different intelligence types.

For those, self included, who have a tendency misspell, write sentences that are a mile long, poor grammer etc etc can only try to do our best.

So please, if you feel the need to criticize...do so constructively.

THANK YOU!!

And yes I know that when using parenthesis you should capitalize the first word.

See!! I didn't know that. The Los Angeles Unified School District let me down!

Then again, I was never one to follow rules.

Are you really supposed to capitalize the first word in parenthesis? This site is so educational. Thanks prof. Hec.

No, you don't capitalize the first word. Hec put a complete sentence within the parenthesis, which does need a capital letter (also a closing period, and another period following the closing parenthesis).

Oops, can I correct my misspelling now? LOL That should be "within the parentheses". :cool:

Hec said aomthing about writing skills very eloquently in another post. I'll quote as best I can from memory.

and then if I continue to use both thumbs, will I be regarded as brain dead...only two brain cells at work?
No I don't think it appropriate to judge someones intelect based on their typing skills, that just seems too unfair. I mean if you took the same attitude with script arguably every Doctor would be a plant!

Umm, I have dyslexic fingers, sorry, I try to type quickly, especially when answering the same question for the third time in a day and my fingers don't always fire in the right oreder. Mavis beacon helped a lot (I use 4 fingers now instead of just two), but for me it is just a matter of trying to go too fast.

Don't read my posts if you can't understand 'em. Seems like I am repeating myself all of the time, anyhow.
