I'm about to start training like a viking with tourettes syndrome, but before I actually pound some mead and head to the gym I need to flesh out a plan. I've been pretty inactive prior to about 2 weeks ago, and even currently I often find myself riding the couch cushion of doom. First of all, I need to drop some weight. but I have been debating wether I should attack it with a clean diet and a buttload of cardio, a clean diet and a buttload of weight training, or a clean diet and a buttload of both. Long term, I plan to grow to the size of a gorilla in heat- but I'm not sure which I should go after first...muscle mass or weight loss. if theres any way that I could accomplish both simultaneously then that would be great, but i'm not sure wether or not thats realistic.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

both! Extra muscle burns extra calories, cardio burns extra calories......extra muscle + extra cardio= more calories burned. I'd say weight train 3 to 4 times a week......and do cardio 5 to 6 times a week this is what i'm doing.......
Sun....shoulders 10mins HIIT
mon....back, grip/forearms 10mins HITT
tues no work out a good jog or 30mins of HITT
wed ...chest, biceps 10mins HITT
thurs....off jog usually
fri,......legs, triceps !0mins HITT
repeat.

I'm at abotu 18% body weight, not good not bad.....so i'm trying to get rid of it slowly not drop alot fast, i don't wanan lose my muscle, and keep as much strength as possible. Also write down your foods for a week or so, write down protin, carbs and fats.....for 2 week sor so, you can stop after that if you like. I did it so i'm aware of how much I was eating. Also to see what caloric range is good for me to maintain strength, as well as lose a lil fat. For me thats about 2300 or so, yours will be a lil different.

ON another note........cardio burns calores there when your doing it, after you stop, its done, weight traing raises your metabolic rate for 2 to 3 hours still burning calories, proper diet will insure if your wasting your time, or building muscle.

cardio has an after effect, also.

Do both, but start gradually and focus mainly on intense lifting with good form - once you get those muscle fired up you will suprised at how fast you can burn calories.

Cardio - Start by alternating lifting days and cardio days - as a back-to-the-start trainee, you can do a toatl body workout M,W,F and do 20 minutes of HIIT Tues,Thur,Sat.

Take the amount of calories you are currently getting in 9track it for 3-4 days and average it out) then cahnge the ratios of protein/carbs/fat to something like 50/30/20 or 40/30/20. Break the amounts into 5-6 small meals a day.

See how your body reacts to this for a month and then fine tune.

yeah, I've been tangling with devising a nutrition plan for quite a while now. It's really a pain in the a$$. I'm going for 50/30/20 (protein, carb, fat) with a total calorie intake of about 2500 to begin with. maybe im just not used to it, but it seems like its going to take a gift from god to get all that protein in on a daily basis. we're talking about 240 grams of protein every day. I'm not used to it. Im going to have tuna and strawberry shakes coming out my ears in a week.

Thanks alot guys.

Right there with you, locust!
I am trying to get in 2700 calories with a 50/30/20 split, that is 337.5g protein!
