Just make your own if you can't find them. Get zinc and magnesium, both very cheap, and take them both. 500 mg. of magnesium and 50 mg. of zinc should work nicely. Add in some B6 if you prefer to.-------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... bb1fit@freetrainers.com |

That's exactly what I do. Got Zinc, Mag, and B6 on vitacost.com for about $15 total. That's enough for about 4 months.-------------- OSU Law Rugby....specializing in personal injury and pain & suffering. | |

Good call guys. They sure charge a huge premium for all three substances in one pill eh. I'll give that a try when I need to restock. Thanks.

One note, I found that you want to get all 3 in pill form, not capsule, or not one capsule and the others pills for instance. I find that they will disolve/probably digest more at the same time. If you have a caplule in there, the gelation capsule will have to disolve, so it will take longer to absorb in my opinion. I think timing is very important here.-------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... bb1fit@freetrainers.com |

Well, yes multi vitamins will not do the trick. You have to take them strategically. I simply do 500 mg. of maganesium(2 250 mg. tablets), and 50 mg. of zinc. Break a 50 mg. B-6 in half, and you will be fine. Do this right before bed.-------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... bb1fit@freetrainers.com |

ZMA is the real deal. On top of everything(the anabolic hormone aspect), it will simply boost your immune system. You can take a Vit. C before bed also if you like. There is no toxicity issue with it, it is simply minerals. There is a possiblity of to much Zinc leading to a copper deficiency, but this is very rare. If you take a multi during the day anyway that has trace minerals, you will cover all your basis. I personally for many years have taken zinc(it is one of my staples I am never without). If I feel the slightest bit of a cold coming on, I will immediately start with a Vit. C and zinc regimine every 3 hours, on top of my normal intake.

It is absorbed better. You don't have to have a completely empty stomach, in fact a good scenario would be to take it after your last meal, about 2 hrs. should do, then within an hour have your before bed meal if you are doing that. Especially if you are doing any, they fight feircely for absorbtion. Then go to bed. The largest daily burst of natural growth hormone occurs during stage 3 and 4, about 1 1/2 to 2 hours after going to sleep. Insulin, testosterone, zinc, and magnesium increase the effect of growth hormone. So, this is the time you want zinc and magnesium at a peak level in the bloodstream.

doesn't it have to be Magnesium Aspartate? Isn't that what the A is for in ZMA?

i was reading the same thing, that the reason making it yourself is not as good as buying it, is because you need to use magnesium aspartate and zinc aspartate. Can someone clarify??

BB1, I'm trying to follow your recipe, but all I can find are 50 mg tablets of magnesium, and the bottle says to take max 2 per day. Am I reading you right when you say 500 mg's?

ssminnow, it is not a placebo. ZMA does not induce sleep, it enhances the quality of your sleep. It enhances recovery while increasing sleep efficiency. Healing, tissue repair, anabolic hormone production and growth are maximized during sleep, so quality sleep is essential.

bb1fit, it sure has enhanced my sleep. I know this to be true because I never get good sleep like I have ben getting since I started ZMA. Is this something I can take for the rest of my life? WIll my body evenetually get used to it and will the effectiveness wear off? I wish I knew about ZMA sooner. Better late then never!

ZMA is simply minerals. Some brand names have a proprietary additive of some sort, like NAC in one brand I can think of(I believe EAS or Cytodyne), but even with this, it is no problem. I too was a terrible sleeper, now I sleep most all the time. You can take it as long as you like. I have it right along with my Vit. C now, one of those things I never ever without.-------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... bb1fit@freetrainers.com |

I took zinc once for a cold and got so sick from it I threw up. I've been afraid to take it since. Does this possibly indicate an allergy to zinc? If so, I'm curious if taking zinc in concert with the other two minerals would lessen the effects of an upset stomach. Any thoughts?

Maybe you just threw up because you were sick. Give zinc another shot and see what happens. Keep the dosage low just in case though.
I remember when I was little, eating a purple popsicle and vomiting. It took me 4 years before I had another. I threw up because of motion sickness though. Nobody likes it, but it really isn't anything to be afraid of. |

on my bottle it says take 2 pills daily.. i thought you are supposed to take it 1 hour before bed ?? (one pill)
are they just trying to sucker us into using the product more quickly or is it more effective to have 2 pills a day ??? |

What kind did you get? Most ZMA doses are 2 or 3. Depends on who makes them. The only one that varies in when to take it is EAS I believe, they say before training also, which is not necessary. Just take the dose before bed.

Vitamin B6 3.5 mg Magnesium 150 mg So, 3 of them will give you the desired amounts. Favorable doseage is in this area... magnesium 450mg, Zinc: 30mg -------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... bb1fit@freetrainers.com |

the only thing i have wondered about is the form of the zinc and magnesium. For some reason I feel that geting aspartate is important. Thats what the A in ZMA is for. I have finally started to experience the "amazing sleep" part of taking Zinc & Magnesium. It took about 1 week. BB1 addressed the "A" part above, the aspartate is used for more effective delivery of the Z & M. I don't know whether to chalk it up to the Z & M or the glucosamine I'm taking, but I'm happy to report that my knee seems 100% better (was causing pain after running) and my stubborn rotator cuff tear in my right shoulder seems to have dissapeared....-------------- If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.--- Desiderata, Max Ehrmann, 1927 |

Yes, you are quite correct in your reasoning. The aspartate is a "transport". A synthesizing enzyme as I mentioned above, and does help assimilation. Some folks do well without it, some need it. You will have to experiment with both ways and find which is best for you. I personally found by experimenting for me the Cytodyne brand worked the best, they are chewable, but also happen to be the most expensive. :( I have for the last month or so now just been using zinc and magnesium, and it seems to be working well for me. So, I will stick with it for now, but if any trouble arises, my sleep means very much to me, I will immediately make the switch.:)
