i read somewhere that in the ZMA combo, both the zinc and magnesium have to be in aspartate form and cannot be chelate. is this true? because my zinc is chelate but my magnesium is apartate. i didn't know to look for this. thanks guys

i had the same question when i first started taking ZMA. I figured the A in ZMA stands for aspartate so it should all be aspartate. BB1fit said that the aspartate is one delivery method but other forms should work as well. Basically he said to give it a try and see what works best for you.
I decided just to buy ZMA rather then get then separate. This way, in my mind there was no question.

They are usually chelated with amino acids. Chelating minerals to amino acids enhances their bioavailability and smaller amounts are more effectively utilized and are thus more effective.

as a side question, i recently reccomneded ZMA to a good friend of mine and told him to buy the zinc and magnesium separatly. he bought a combo of zinc, magnesium and calcium and then some extra zinc to meet a good amount of zinc as normal ZMA. but i read that calcium can block absorbtion of the zinc and magnesium. is this true? so should i tell him to avoid the calcium?

yes, you should avoid calcium when trying to get the benefits of ZMA. You are exactly right that they compete for absorption.
Also, bb1fit made a great point in another post. If you are buying the compnents separately, make sure they are all in the same form (capsule etcc) The trick to ZMA is the synergy of the Zinc, Magnesium and Vitamin B6 at the same time. With different pill forms, they may be broken down at different rates thus reducing the effectiveness.
I tried disolving a capsule and a tablet in separate cups with red vinegar and the tabled desolved in 5 minutes. The capsule took about an hour for the gelatin outside to dissolve.
