Hi. My name is Katie. I am 27 years old. I have always struggled with my weight since i was a teen. I have 2 young kids now. I am so ready to get into shape and lose weight. I want to be healthy for myself and my kids. So that i can be a role model for them. I have a very low self esteem about myself. I really want to change that. I have been eating healthy and seen some results, so the self esteem issue is slowly getting better. Well wish me luck!!!!

Hi. My name is Jennifer. I'm new here. I am a 27 yr old mother of 4 beautiful children and newly married but I'm just not happy with the way my body looks anymore. I went through a major depression and completely let myself go and have tried everything including diet pills and slim fast even tried nutri system but the food tasted so horrible it made me sick. I'm looking to tone my body and get back into shape and I'm willing to do whatever it takes to do so.:)

aj... impressive for your age! However, one thing to keep in mind is that pushing weight like that at your age can be detrimental to your joints in the coming years, as well as to your hips and knees in the future(if you are putting on the pounds up top). You won't feel it now, but putting all that stress on your growing shoulder joints could lead to problems like tendonitis (which i have in my shoulder from lifting too much too young - overexposure), mine started at around 22. As for your hips and knees, every 1 Lb of weight above your waist has the effect of 5 Lb's on your hip and knee joints. As I said you won't notice this until far later in life. My step dad for example has had 1 knee replaced, going in for the other in a month, needs one of shoulders replaced, and possibly both knees. He was a powerlifter and head of recreation at a prison.

Just remember that what you do know always will catch up later. Be smart, and listen to your body. Anything other than muscle pain should make yo reconsider your workout.

Shel... the best thing I've found in the past to keep me motivated are:

- pictures that 'speak' to your goals.
- a written affirmation
- using a daily planner, scheduling in your workouts/jogs, or whatever it is that you want to do, with the rest of your daily things.
- getting a friend as interested as you to join you, and keep each other motivated
- start slow(twice a week or so) and create a balance with the rest of your life. Once working out just falls into place and doesn't seem like a chore, add another day. This allows you to use light weights and 'play around' at the gym, getting an idea of what you like and don't like.
- Watch personal trainers and their clients and learn the exercises.
- Don't set any definate goals until you're REALLY into it, and it's a part of your life. It takes alot of time to really notice the real difference that exercise has made for you overall.
- do situps and pushups in your room after doing some jumping jacks to warm up your joints as soon as you wake up.

The list goes on, write out what I said here and just try it all, see what works overtime, and eventually it'll jsut fall into place. If you don't you risk getting lost in another moment and forgetting about the gym, or exercise and then it's usually too late. It can be a vicious cycle sometimes, so you need to just be patient and find what works for you.

I forgot one of the most important points! Eat 5-6 small healthy meals a day. If you don't know to much about nutrition, it's ok! Just start eating healthy foods inplace of the crap foods.

some examples of wat to substitute:
- pasta? try whole wheat, or atleast the fibre enriched white.
- sandwhich? go with some sort of whole grain. enriched bread contains only about 5 nutrients out of the 20 found in whole grain.
- donuts? try a bran muffin with a little butter.
- craving something?
- salty - try salted nuts instead of chips
- sweet - try fruit instead icecream
- crunchy - try baby carrots, or pickles instead of chips
- chocolate - try dark instead of milk

You will be truly amazed at how different you feel in terms of mood and general well-being when you get to the point where 90% of your diet is healthy foods constructed into the 5-6 small daily meals every 2.5 - 3 hours.

Hi everyone, I'm new too. My name is Brittney, I'm about to turn 20 and I'm a college student from Los Angeles.

I have always been very active, I am a second degree black belt in kempo karate, I surf, snowboard, ride my bike pretty much everywhere and I play softball for school. If you don't find me at school or work you will usually find me at the gym...

Even with all of this I have trouble losing weight... I'm 5'2 and I weigh 131lbs. I'm looking to lose 10-15lbs (I gained about 7lbs after going home to Boston for 2 months in December/January). I have always eaten fairly healthy, lots of fruits and veggies, lots of meat, but I also have a huge sweet tooth and I tend to eat small meals, so then I end up snacking...

I have this layer of fat on my stomach that I am really trying to get rid of... That is my main goal, to lose the weight I gained over the holidays and to get rid of the pudge on my stomach. I also want to tone my muscles in general...

I'm happy I found this site because having a set plan (that I don't have to pay a personal trainer $35 per hour to get) will definately help me stay focused on my goal. I tend to get bored easily and sometimes I don't know where to start, so I like the step by step and the fact that I can track my progress and actually see a change.

Hey Brittney, if you go a few posts up in this thread you will find a list of things that I compiled to get and keep you motivated. As for your small meals maybe they just aren't balanced in proportions? Carbs, protein and fats. If you are really lacking any of the 3 in a meal you will get cravings for things, whereas, atlaest I find personally, proportioning of your my meals will eliminate cravings. To burn the fat off, keep your calories in mind. Research TDEE (total daily energy expenditure)on google, or here and also the 'zig-zag' method. Another to look into is HIIT (high intensity interval training).

Hey everyone, my name is Beci, im 22 and live in the UK, im a student studying for my PhD in sports psychology. Unfortunately, I know the theory but ive always been a bit rubbish with the practical. I've been overwieght since I was about 13 and im so sick of feeling awful everytime I have to get dressed up and go out or go clothes shopping. So, it's time to do something serious about it. Im about 160lbs now (im only 5ft) and want to get down to about 130lbs. Also I want to feel stronger, fitter and healthier. Like most people I need a shove in the right direction to keep me going once ive started. Im one of those people who does really well for about 2/3 weeks then 'something comes up' and it all goes down the pan for a month or two so I never really get anywhere. All encouragement (gentle or otherwise) is absolutely welcome! :)

Hello, my name is Jessica I'm 22 yrs old. I have a 3 yr old daughter. That's why I joined today. I have gained pounds like there's no tomorrow. All the usual physical and mental problems have jumped along for the ride. I'm ready to kick it out the door and take back my happiness. For my daughter's sake and mine. I'm 220 now and my goal is 150. Being 220 is not fun or pretty and I'm afraid if this doesn't stop now it won't stop.

When you get to the point that you really wanna see yourself with a smaller waist you will get motivate. We all started out with lack of motivation. You may get alot of emails on this question but there is only one answer. You have to motivate yourself. You will not find it nowhere else.

Hey all. I'm Dave. I'm a happily married 27 year old guitar playing hard working guy. I love my wife and want to be as healthy and attractive as possible for her. I used to visit the gym regularly and was in great shape. However, after meeting my wife I devoted so much time to her that eventually I stopped going to the gym (I'm in no way blaming her!). I'm 5'9" tall and weigh 176 pounds. I am trying to cut down to about 160 pounds seeing as how most of my extra weight is being carried around my midsection! At my strongest I weighed in at 160 and was benching 270 pounds and in great shape. I've still managed to carry a bit of muscle in my chest and arms, but I've put on the belly weight that EVERYONE wants to shave off. So here I am seeking words of encouragement and offering it to others. Nice to meet everyone!

Hey, my name's Taylor and I just joined this website tonight. I'm 18 and a senior in high school and seeing as college is right around the corner I'd like to come into it with a new body and a healthy lifestyle. I'm about 6'0 ft and 215, I'm not in bad shape but I'm DEFFINATELY not at my goals.
I've tried my own diets and somehow I end up quiting within a week or two. Hopefully I can stick to this.

Hi, I'm Sam! Just joined this site today (YAY!) and I hope that this might just give me the support I need to keep going. I just need to keep my motivation. I became a vegetarian 2 years ago (again, YAY!) and lost about 10lbs in those first few months just by changing my diet. But I didn't change my exercise routine at all. Now being in college, I'm at the heaviest I've ever been (160lbs, boo!), and I really want to get rid of it. My school has an amazing rec center, and I definately plan on getting my money's worth! Hopefully this will help!

Hey, I'm Marly, and I just joined last week. I'm curious if any of you have done the home-excercise plan? I don't have the cash to join a gym so I got the excercise plan that you can do with home appliances. So far it feels like it could definitely make a difference, but it would be really great to hear it from someone who knows. :] Anyway, stay strong everyone.

I just joined but I figure it'll work because working out when I haven't before and eating better has to make some change. It would be impossible for things to stay the same. Just like we did not become overweight overnight we cannot get lean overnight either. Whether we realized it or not we chose to not exercise and to eat poorly resulting in our condition. We do this to ourselves and teach our children to do the same thing. Why?... But we can choose to change that as well. Our actions speak the real truth. If we want to lose weight we will because if we really want it then we will stop making excuses about why we can't do it and start doing what we need to do to get what we want. If you want to eat ice cream or McDonalds you just do it because you want to. You do not say I don't have time to go to McDonalds or I can't afford to eat ice cream. Its too hard to scoop the ice cream or some other lame excuse. As my grandmother used to say..."Can't never could do nothing." She is right if we say we can't then we can't. We have to have a can do attitude otherwise it will be fruitless. We can't give up either. If we give up then we lose. Its okay to fail. Everyone fails. We can't be afraid of failure. We just pick ourselves up again and keep trying. Eventually we will succeed. It's inevitable! I hope the best for everyone out there. Don't have a limited belief system. The right mindset is what will truly allow you to succeed! It may take a long time, it may take hard work, it may not, but either way you CAN do it!

Hi! My name is Victoria but most peoplecall me Vicki. I just joined this site because I'am looking for a little extra motivation to get into better shape. Next year I would like to try out for a college girls swimsuit calendar but I need to tone up a bit. I don't have problem eating fast food (haven't ate any in 5 months ) but I have a HUGE problem eating chocolate. I honestly have a hard time not eating it because I love it so much. How do I stop?

hello! new member here. I've browsed the site and it seems I may like it here. Lots of support! I think my biggest issue is not that i eat too much but that i dont eat enough. I grew up hearing that people who eat too much gain the weight but now i realize that if you eat too little you gain it too because your body stores the fat because you are basically starving yourself. I lead a busy life and believe it or not i can go hours "forgetting" to eat. I am not a food lover. chocolate once a month (you know when girls) but I have no other gotta have it foods. Another problem is..i am a bland simple eater. A lot of times I have tried to look up healthy recipes and they are laced with onions and peppers which i dont like. Or it takes 50 ingredients to make one dish and i am not into that at all. We have to budget around here so a lot of time its simpler the better. If anyone has any thoughts, ideas, or anything please feel free to shout it out to me. Thanks!

I just joined this site and am very excited about getting my life back on track. I have struggled for the past 20 years with my weight and I'm tired of it. I am not one that likes to eat alot of salads...I do not like salad dressing so a salad is sort of dry to me so I don't eat them. I am going to need alot of encouragement and support from everyone so brace yourself...LOL.

Hey, I'm new. I'm 25 and I've been overweight since about 4th grade. I'm not at my heaviest at about 215, I'm scared to find out how much really. But I'm ready for a change.

I need to learn to manage my time better, so i'm investing in my well being.

So here goes...

I'm new here too! I have been been on medication for the last five years, that as a side effect, put a lot of weight on me. It's scary! I've gained 150+lbs. in 5 years! Enough is enough and it's time to get this weight off. I'm here meaning business. I'm tired of being tired all the time. Just walking is laborsome. I seriously going to do it this time! WooHoo!
