i perfer deadlifts over any of my other lifts. i feel that there a great workout and produce very good results and also its satisfying pulling all that weight.-------------- -Andrew |

i am doin 265 for 2 sets of 3 right now. i will get my 1rm in like 2 weeks... hoping i can probably put up close to 300 due to supplemental lifts. oh... and that is on a fat bar and i weigh 178lbs

nice. when I was training for wrestling, ALL my deadlifts were double overhand fat bar off a platform. Excellent for posterior chain and grip strength. im using 1 over 1 under for my fat bar lifts... i think when i try for 1rm i might use reg olympic bar... might help me do a little more.. or do you think thats incorrect?

You'll defianetly do more. I only did thick bar deadlifting as a supplemental move though. Mostly for grip work, and so that I didn't put too much stress on my posterior chain.
Nate... You were overhead squatting 130? Thats impressive. I think I was doing 135 at the end of an 8 week cycle. Its amazing how fast that lift went up and how much it improved my core strength. I actually started doing it to build up shoulder stability. Trust me menace, I of all people have had more than my share of shoulder injuries. I feel my shoulders are much more stable and healthy since using them. Just start light, and I usually only worked up to a 5 or 3rm. haha... so i got my max dl... pronatin grip with stance about shoulder maybe little more and hands just inside power rings. i hit 295x1 and then tried 315 but couldnt do it (i tried 3times which was probably dumb) and then tried 305 and 300 but to no avail.. i think if i had gone up to just 300 after 295 i would have been fine. thats a PR for me... no 400 or anythin... but whatever

It also helps to teach one how to properly use the abdominals in the squat. That is how sheiko used to train, and westside stole this and popularized it.

I'm finally back to FULL leg training. god i missed squatting and deadlifting...
Hit 225 today for 3 triples with the thick bar, double overhand, pulling from a 3 inch deficit. Barely noticed the defecit, but the weight was damn hard to lock out without it slipping from my hands. Next time I'll switch to an alternating grip, and work up to a max. My goal for when I return to school is 365 on a regular bar. -------------- Pain is only temporary, it is in your mind. The deadlift in the deadlift for reps for the strongman competition is going to be 345lbs. With straps. Just found out the DL for reps in the strongman competition will be a 400lb axel. We'll see how I far, but I promise I will lock that thing out at least once. Bodyweight is moving up, I'm hovering under 155 now.

Pulled 405 at the competition. No belt. This was a huge PR, at 155lbs bodyweight. Probably had more in me, but it was a 405lb dl for reps. My plan right now is to take the next 2-3 weeks off of singles for deadlifts. I am working on speed and I will do triples maybe. i hit 355 for 3 on sumo the other day. yay for me! tried 405 today to see if i was in superhero mode.. but i failed. failed on 375 too... which should be right around 1rm. must be the fact that my hip has been killing me for at least a week straight.

Wouldnt jump like that ...good way to injure yourself...
Once I heal from my hip injury....I'll try to slowly creep to 700.....my grip is improving as well...I should be now able to hold on to around 600... | |

well it was basically me doin one of those heavy holds... you know... to tense up your body... like when you hold the +100% weight over you for bench, cept i did at bottom portion of deadlift, to help with explosion. but my hip was hurting before and after so i wasnt very sucessful. haha- so maybe you are right, which would completely waste my arguement..

Be careful....sometimes I/others mention things of the top of our heads without thinking whether you can apply it to yourself...some of the things we mention are fairly advanced so u need to have good judgement when to apply them....
I would actually drop the weight considerably and do the deadlifts off a box...stand on maybe 4-6" box and lift the bar off the floor...trust me that will strengthen the bottom portion of the lift... intensity is good...but attempting weight you KNOW is more than ur max is just foolish....a great way to injure yourself...going balls to the wall and being bone headed are 2 very different things....i have done both...so I know LOL... If u are going to use supramaximal weight...make sure u can handle it...and above all make sure your SAFETY is not compromised....so have a spotter ...doing negatives is another way you can really strengthen yourself quickly... lowering the weight slowly off a box(while standing on a box) to the floor....which pretty much u should be inside a cage....u can start with 95-100% sets of 1...and increase the intensity to 101+%.... | |

i completely get you cept for one thing- how are you saying use supramaximal weight and make sure you can handle it? that doesnt really make sense. if i am doin a hold on bench with supra weight, it is only at the extended portion or with a negative to get a feel for the weight.
i really do like your box idea, but im tryin to blow up my sumodl... how would i have a high box and have legs so far apart? or shoudl i just turn back to conventional for that? and to defend myself so as to not look like a dumba$$, i hit my 355x3 with ease, should have gone for 5 but wanted to save some energy for other lifts. i probably could have gotten close to at least 6 or 7 which would put my max right around 400, so this shouldnt have been an issue. the only problem was a hip injury that i thought had subsided. i cant really comprehend the spotter on deadlifts too... i mean... if im goin to ditch the weight.. the last thing i want is someone tryin to make me hold on it or get in the way of it fallin. i believe it is easier to not have. thanks for your concern and please do critique my above comments cuz im just tryin to make sense of things. |

uh... in regards to the first part, i meant, i will have 100%+ and thats not really able to be properly "handled" its more like slowing it down.
and i will definetly put the box into practice this week seeing as tho the bottom of the lift is my worst point. |

To use a supramaximal technique for dl, I might recommend doing rack lockouts with 100%+.
Although, considering I can pull what I can lockout, this doesn't necessarily apply to me, but you can take from it what you will. You said you have difficulty pulling from the floor, so this may be a good idea that is applicable to you. I would NOT recommend a supramaximal isometric in the hole. Bad idea IMO. I also would not recommend negatives for a deadlift. I may have to call you out on this menace. While I am all for it for certain lifts, this is not something I would be willing to risk my stock in. As for pulling from a deficit to strengthen your pull from the ground, excellent advice. Simple, yet effective. I almost always used to pull from a deficit (to make up for the fact that I was using a thick bar), and I can get above my max off the ground. -------------- Iron and chalk. perhaps negatives on deadlifts is not the best of ideas....but I still wouldnt rule it out completely...I may give it a try sometime... I can lift more at the bottom and at the top of a deadlift ...I get stuck right at the middle.....I am sure I can do a good 5% or more in bottom or top position than I can for a complete rep... | |

Well the deadlift is my favourite exercise. And i agree its a proper indication of strength. I use to use straps, but i learnt that if i wanted to increase my strength i'd have to strenghten my forearms. So i binned the straps and chalked up instead!
I'm 180lb and can lift 400lb (182.5kg) for 4 reps in good form. I think thats quite impressive, but when it comes to benching, i'm lucky to push past 210lb. And my shoulders are not the best.... ha ha. Can't have everything your own way right?!
