i dunno about any of th other "expierenced" guys( girls) but i realy getting tired of people posting questions over and over again about how they can bench more, i mean no offense i wouldn't mind having 50lbs on my bench we all would but come on there are other things in life to worry about, and other muscles. When did it become a test of man hood about how much u can bench press? I see so many guys in the weight rooom that come in 3 times a week and do nothing but arms and chest thats it! but i do notice that these guys seem to wear sweat pants alot, gee i wonder y?
would anyone here build a 20 story building with out a foundation? hell no its not safe i wouldn't go in it lol.. your body is like a contractor, it builds and rebuilds muscle for u, giving u give it what u want... however ur ' contractor" will only allow u body to get so strong or so out of " proportion"( ex. upper body bigger than lower)so i have read anyways i don't have the artical to back it up though , your lower body has bigger muscles in it for a reason to carry it tall and proud. so take care of ur whole body and it will take care of you!.......the ark wasn't built in a day and it do have a good inner foundation as well! sorry just need to vent off a lil -------------- ---andrew.......adversity causes some to break, but others to break records! |

The reason everyone wants to have that bigger bench is because it's the standard in society. Have you ever noticed that when someone notices you and notices that you workout, they tend to ask, "What do you bench?" or "What do you lift?" Now you and I know that they are not referring to our squat or shoulder press or deadlift or cleans on that last question. They only want to hear what you bench because that's all they know. Look at every magazine in publication regarding workouts, ie M&F, Flex, Muscular Development, etc. Each one has an "article" (term used very loosely) about a bigger bench or bigger chest. This makes the novice or those people who are ignorant about weightlifting focus on the chest.
It also has to do with were people focus their attention. We look at the chest, shoulders, and arms first. If you are a true weightlifter/bodybuilder, you notice back and legs as well, but the general public focuses on the first three. This causes the constant desire for a bigger bench and bigger chest. Personally, I prefer to talk about my leg strength instead of my upper body. But, for you novices, with that lower body foundation comes the bigger upper body. You don't have to have a massive bench to show a massive body. Even though I don't have a massive 1rm on bench, I still look big and get plenty of compliments and stares. It's quite gratifying because I know that those come from my foundation of legs and back and not so much bench. Andrew, you're completely correct about the body needing a good, strong foundation. Unfortunately, in a shallow, first-impression based society, it's the chest and bench that rule. We can only laugh at those guys with big shoulders, big arms, big chests and tiny, scrawny legs. -------------- Pain is but a threshold to greater strength. |

yea i get looks too, even though i have a conciderably weak bench even though people think i bench like 375 lol its really quite funny, but any time some one does ask me i know that 9 times outta 10 they r trying to bost there ego and not trying to have a friendly compotition, and i say anyone can bench.........but met meet me at the squat rack baby, and trust me i don't to sissy squats!-------------- ---andrew.......adversity causes some to break, but others to break records! |

i'm not nothing to sneeze at by no means lol i can do more reps that actually weight, on a new power program i'm on one week i did 200lbs for 17 reps by myself, then when i gto to 225 i did that for 9 reps, then when i hit 250 it was like 6 reps, then 275 for like 4 reps. that was as far as i got in the program .
one week ur start out at 12 reps for the 1st set after that u have 3 sets of as many as u can do by urself, next work out its 10 reps, then 3 sets of as many as u can do without a spot and so one, i only made it tell week 9 of a 12 week program -------------- ---andrew.......adversity causes some to break, but others to break records! |

That is one of my biggest pet peaves with idiots in the gym..."how do I get my bench better?" I like how Jplatz incorperated the sociological aspect of bench press as the excuse.LOL I competed in bench for a few years and I still never measured a person's overal strength by their bench. Case in point; my buddy benches 420 and can't even squat 385. He's a meat-head. As much as I adore my bench press and the achievements I've made therein, It really doesn't mean crap in the overall scheme of things.-------------- May the lift be with you. |

cleans...........i have just no incoprpereted them back into my routine, cause i kinda retired them but now i have reintroduced them. i haet very good form at oen time but then my coach made us start doing hang cleans, wich is ok but he woudl make us max doing them off the floor my body couldn't do both lol.......at the most i was 222 and could clean 280 hanging from my theighs.........nwo i'm comming off the floow once again and since i don't have a spotter can't go heavy, and i don't have rubber weights which is noisy using metal ones lol but i do 225 for 9 reps btu my probel is i don't drop under it it goes from floor to my chest with a very slight bend in my knees, i don't get paraler liek i should lol-------------- ---andrew.......adversity causes some to break, but others to break records! What is the difference in the incline bench press and the regular lying on your back benchpress? What significant muscles does each one work? I do both. Don't ask me how much I can bench either, remember I am just a halfpint. LOL

lol incline bench works more your upper chest, and regular bench is more middle chest area, then decline works your lower chest........decline chest actually uses more muscle fibers, especially if you use dumbells-------------- ---andrew.......adversity causes some to break, but others to break records! Hey who care about the other guy in the gym. This is a personal war! lol. I see guys all the time who are smaller in stature than me but can move allot of weight good for them. I am happy as long as I can beat last weeks max. When it comes to bench I cant even use the 75's for it. I primairly use dumbells for the bench workouts. I do use barbells for inlcine as part of my program. My best for the benches is one 45lbs dumbell in each hand. -------------- I must not fear. if your saying the excercise is not right for your age then why are you benching and squating?
