Thanks Great discussion. |

If fat burn is your goal, have a meal of lean protein/fats and fiber. This will keep intact any lypolysis you may have achieved from your workout.

My advice to you is to do your cardio on empty tummy (and burn all the fat you can) and then get a protein shake after to protect your muscles. Are there any alternatives other than the protein shake? eggs? |

I've heard that if you exercise without eating anything before that your body will run out of energy and will start eating your muscle tissue for energy. I don't know if its true and I'm wondering if someone out there with a more knowledge than me could tell me.

that is mostly what the entire discussion of this post is - reread it. Also read bbfits post about cardio. I think he answers that question as well.-------------- If you fall down seven times, get up eight. I\'m not lazy, I\'m energetically challenged. |

is there anything else besides a protien shake you can put in your tummy before your am exercise? i gag at the taste of protien shakes and everytime i try to make alterations they seem heavy and almost counter productive.

lucyfly - have a small meal - scrambled eggs and a little oatmeal if you are doing cardio first thing.

Okay I work different shifts (days/afternoons) so usually I'll work out after work on both occasions, which is about 430 in the aft, or 9 at night. Therefore I eat after I work out on both occasions. Is this a bad thing for losing fat? and does it matter what I eat such as carbs because I tend to lean toward pasta.

thanks asimmer.
i started this morning. i usually can't eat too much before a work out.. i ended up eating about a 1/3 of the go lean kashi protien bars. about 30. i don't think i could stomach eggs and oatmeal. although the toast and pb might be good.. but even then i might just have a half of that. i felt great today though.i only did 25 of regular jog. i'm gonna try hiit tomorrow. its great because i lift later and don't run the risk of burning anything! .. i'll let you know how the fat loss progresses.. although i'm premenstral right now.. haha:surprised:  |

One post says ok to do cardio on empty stomache, another says no. I guess it depends on how much fat you have to lose. Different things work for different people I suppose.

melissa - pick a program from freetrainers and get going - you will lose fat by weightlifting and doing cardio on a regular basis and supporting your efforts with healthy eating.
If you are new to cardio, start with 15 minutes, 3 times a week and gradualy add minutes each week. Don't neglect weightlifting, though. besides weight loss it has many aditional benefits for women! -------------- "The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes." yes i think you'll have the same effect.. for the body it doesn't counts whether its day or night when u woke up.. all what counts is that u JUST woke up and have an empty stomach.. but as u've read above.. do give some protein supply to ur body b4 doing ur cardio.. otherwise... as bb1 said u gonna risk losing ur LBM.-------------- A life worth living is a life lived with honor and dignity..bow to no moral and bowed by none.. I worked 3rd shift for 6 yrs. I would have a meal when I woke up, my normal breakfast, and head to the gym. I treated my wakeup time just as I would have if it were morning.

Hi everyone - I found this thread through a search and I have a question : I have started to work out every morning and do 30-40 minutes of a "full body" routine with weights. 3 afternoons a week I do 45-60 minuts of cardio. I do not feel like Im accomplishing anything. I have low carb intake and eat decent and healthy meals. Im trying to get rid of the fat around my waist, which is where i seem to gain everything. I am frustrated and am pretty useless when it comes to know how to train. I have an athletic build- but i cant loose the fat :(
============ Quoting from bouncer3322: I found out after 2 days, thats right...after 2 days, by doing cardio first thing in the morning will burn 3x as more fat. Trust me...it might be hard to get up and "run" but trust me, if you are comitted like I am, you will do it. In no time..that fat will fly right by! ============= |

hi clade welcome to FT.. first of all.. you are not doing any good to ur body working out so much... ur body needs rest.. i think u r over training it.. secondly.. instead of doing soooo many things.. get a fat lose lean body workout program from FT.. strictly follow it.. strictly follow the diet plan from FT.. do not think that u r over eating and you gonna get FAT or anything.. you need to build muscles to lose fat.. and u won't get any muscle until u provide proper nutrition to the body..
i hope bb1 or other guys would give u more better suggestions.. -------------- A life worth living is a life lived with honor and dignity..bow to no moral and bowed by none.. THATS ME |

Well after reading all the posts, I figured I'd put my 2cents in the pot. I do my cardio 1st thing in the morning on a empty stomach. I get the BEST results from it. My workouts are at night. This seems to work the best for me. I was 255lbs now, as of Last saturday I'm 203lbs. Gaining lean muscle and losing nasty fat.

Hi everyone, I am here to see what information I can gather from you all, to help me achieve my goal of losing 45 lbs. I can't go to the gym early in the morning because I have 2 kids one in school and a 2 month old baby...I can only go for 1/2 hour to do cardio in the afternoon, but I am getting bored on the tread mill, all the music I have are too slow I need more upbeat tempo music to keep my mind occupied, any suggestions? majomo...first get you a home workout program from here. No gym membership required to do them. That will give you everything you need to get the process started. I know the treadmill can be boring, but keep it up while you're doing the program from here. Also check out your local sporting goods store and you should be able to pick up some light dumbbells for fairly cheap, even check out garage sales in your area. Down the road when the baby is a bit older look at stepping up your workouts by searching for a gym with a childrens playroom inside for the wee ones.
Welcome to FT and Good luck on your goals and keep us posted. |

I found a way to stop cardio from being boring... I'm on my elipicle and reading the post at the same time. It makes the time fly!!! I do have a place to put my laptop on the elipical and it is wireless... but if you can figure it out do it. I even look forward to the boring eliptical!!!
Great site and thanks for all the info. I just started last week. I'm afraid I'm eating too much but... I'm going to keep with it and stick to the program and see what happens. |

BB1fit or Asimmer....how do you feel about working out on exercise balls? I bought this book on strengthening and working out your core. I think the authors name is Winnie ..something? I would like to do the lifting at my gym but I always have to wait too long to get on a machine and I like to stay on a specific routine. I'm thinking I might be better off doing the ball workout at home. My main goal is to lose alot of weight and obviously tone up as well.

My last post doesn't necessarily have to be answered by asimmer or bb1fit. Does anybody think that a good fitness ball routine could be better or just as good as the circuits?

HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training. Basically during a workout routine, say a 30mi. cardio, you'd do a 5 min warmup, then interval 2min at a fast pace then 2 min at a moderate pace for a total of 20min, then finish with a 5 min cooldown again at a moderate pace. You can incorporate HIIT into many routines, it is one of the best ways to burn calories, but be warned--it's tough. You can do a fitbuddy search on HIIT to find lots more info.-------------- Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there. |

WELL HELLO EVERYONE! I AM SO GLAD I REMEMBERED THAT I AM A MEMBER ON THIS SITE.. I FORGOT FOR A WHILE... KAY WELL I WOULD LIKE TO EXPLAIN MY SITUATION... I AM 20 YEARS OLD, AND WAS A CHEERLEADER IN HIGH SCHOOL WITH A SLIGHT BUT MUSCULAR BUILD, AND FOR THE FIRST 18 YEARS OF MY LIFE I NEVER WEIGHED MORE THAN 105 LBS (I'M 5"3) WELL... I JOINED GOLD'S GYM THREE YEARS AGO AND I WORK OUT RELIGIOUSLY! MY EATING HABITS ARE DECENT (PROTEIN AT MOST MEALS, VEGGIES, FRUIT, CARBS) A PRETTY BALANCED DIET (DESPITE MY INCREDIBLY VORACIOUS SWEET TOOTH) WELL... I WEIGHED MYSELF RECENTLY (SOMETHING I'M VERY HESITANT TO DO) AND I DISCOVERED THAT I WEIGH 120!!! WITH ABOUT 20-21% BODY FAT WHICH ALMOST ALL SEEMS TO BE LOCATED AROUND MY ABDOMEN... NOW MY QUESTION... WHAT TYPE OF WORK OUTS SHOULD I BE DOING AND WHAT SHOULD I BE EATING? I WOULD IDEALLY LIKE TO WEIGHT BETWEEN 110 AND 103 WITH 15-17% BODY FAT... sORRY THIS IS SO LONG BUT I WOULD JUST LIKE TO TELL YOU ABOUT MY WOPRKOUT REGIMEN SO I CAN FIGURE OUT WHAT MY PROBLEM IS! I GO TO THE GYM AT LEAST 4 TIMES PER WEEK (USUALLY EVENINGS) I DO A 10 MINUTE WARM UP WITH EITHER ELIPTICAL OR TREADMILL (6.0 MPH) AND THEN DO RESISTANCE TRAINING FOR 30 MINS TO AN HOUR (ABS EVERY DAY) I THEN DO CARDIO FOR 30 MINUTES... I ROTATE MY MUSCLE GROUPS TO ENSURE PROPER REST... I'M JUST NOT SURE WHAT TO DO!!! I KNOW I NEED TO CUT OUT THE SUGAR... BOY I NEED SOME GUIDANCE! THANKS SO MUCH FOR READING THIS AND I LOOK SO FORWARD TO HEARING INPUT!

I think the cardio you're referring to is a warm-up period. Mind you, this cardio is light, just enough to warm up your muscles. You can't work cold muscles without expecting injury. Again, this cardio is not the fat-burning, calorie-consuming cardio these people are referring to. Warm-up cardio is fine.
I think the best reason why you should do your fat-burning, energy-consuming cardio after weight training is this: Both activities require energy and so you're going to get tired. If you get tired from cardio, you stop running. If you get tired lifting weights, you drop a barbell on your chest. (I forgot who said it - I think it was febreeze) ============ Quoting from shene107: I'm confused about something.I am trying to lose weight and get some tone and muscle definition too. i heard that doing about 20 mins of cardio before weight training is a good thing, because its gets your metabolic rate up. Then i hear that you shouldn't do it, because you won't be able to lift as much. I'm confused:( ============= I prefer to do some cardio in the morning. I run for about 30 minutes in the morning at college; NO ONE is out there (at 6:00 am, I should imagine why)! At 6:30-6:45 I come back in and shower and have a protein shake, then go to breakfast in the caf around 7:30, then go to (-cringe-) biology or psychology (depending on the day). I feel more awake and more pleasant after running, but I do it on an empty stomach because I don't feel hungry when I wake up. Should I eat some fruit or something before I run? |
