I am about 80 lbs overweight. I started exercising a few weeks ago, and not sure what I need to do, or where to start. I am doing the treadmill for 20-30 min and then the weights 3 x 15 reps. any suggestions.

ok i weigh 188 pounds and im 5'6. i do 50 min of cardio in the morning before i eat anything and lift weights every day. i am looking to loose around 30 more pounds as i have already lost about 20 in the past 3 months as fast as possible so i was wondering if in the morning i should do weights or cardio first and whether it will be more beneficial to eat some egg whites or have a protein shake before or after my hard work out, or if at all? also will protein drinks make me gain weight which is something i dont want?:(

Most endurance trainees take in a higher carb diet than say bodybuilders. This is due to glucose depletion on a larger scale.

I have been trying for about 3 years to loose weight. I have come to a point in my life where it just dont go anywhere. I will loose 5 or 6 pounds but a month later it will be back. I am trying to loose weight not just to look better. I am worried about my health. I am only 27 years old I was told that due to my uncontrolled weight I may not be able to have children until I can get my weight under control. I have something called PCOS and it all revolves around my weight. I have my whole life ahead of me. But the weight just won't come off. Please help me if you can. I would appreciate it so much.

Losing weight is all about calories. This simply means taking in less calories than you expend. Exercise will generate some calorie expenditure, the rest of the deficit will have to come from diet. No other way around it, any diet by any name does the same thing, limit caloric intake in some fashion.

I have joined a gym (Curves)and I do a circuit of resistance training for 30mins three times a week.I am confused about my pulse rate.My resting rate is 62 beats per minute. What does my pulse rate need to be to be and how long do I need to keep it at that rate to burn fat?I need to loose about ten kilos.

Man,I wish I could take a hammer and pound into folks' heads to forget about some 'fat burning zone', or even the amount of fat burned during exercise. What makes the difference is what you do between training sessions. You may actually burn very little fat during your exercise, but it is the 'vehicle' for you to burn fat. Losing fat is all about calories.

You don't need supplements, machines, nor weights to lose weight. All it takes is watching what you eat, making sure you eat the right foods at the right times in the right quantities. For your cardio, if you are out of shape start by just going for a walk everyday, then mixing in some walking/jogging combinations, then straight jogging. For the weight training, what I have a lot of people do is just go around there house and look for cans of food or miscealaneous objects around the house to do repititions lifting, or take an empty milk jug, fill it with water, and lift that.

Also in response to bb1fit's comment, he is 100% exactly right (which he usually is). The whole concept of losing weight/burning fat is by a calorie deficit. If you take in more calories than your body uses, than you store it as fat. If you take in less, the opposite happens. You actually lose very little fat during the workout, it occurs mostly during the rest of the day while your body needs to pull from something to maintain you for the rest of the day. Fat is slower in breaking down, so your body doesn't use much of it during the workout because it isn't a feasible energy source. For example, if you were running a cash register in a store during a busy time, and someone paid you in cash, would you make change for every order out of the register door that opens up, which is easily accesable, or make change out of the locked safe in the office, which is still doable but more time consuming and less efficient? Same basic concept. Figure the fat as that money in the safe. You wait until after the busy time to replenish the cash register door from the safe (fat).

Hope this helps.

Rabbit, I lost 10 pounds without any supplements in about 10 weeks. I didn't really change my diet drastically. I simply cut back on the amounts I was eating. I was a bit concerned when I started the weight training thinking I might negate some of my losses, but I guess I had enough fat to continue to lose weight.

As far as supplements and the diets, I am at a total loss. I've read for hours and still can't make heads nor tails of them!!

As you diet and start to get very lean, then supplementation can be useful. But it is not of the type that the fast fat loss scam artists would have you use. As you become lean, and with long periods of dieting, cortisol begins to run rampant, thyroid starts to slow along with metabolism, test levels decrease, leptin and gherlin get totally wacky...this is what supplements may help. Supplements here can help your body keep 'humming along' so to speak with less detrimental aspects, like tons of muscle loss along with fat. But, this is when dieting to very low bodyfats, like competition levels. There can be no 'breaks' many times here either, as the contest will not wait for you to get ready for it.

'Diet' should be a term used to describe your eating/lifestly habits. Not a definite term of some live by/die by eating plan.

I am ~33% body fat and weigh 155 lbs. I know that is not "lean" by any means. Am I at risk for "burning muscle" if I do cardio in the morning?

Hi Everyone. How soon after doing weights do I need to drink my PWO shake and what should the shake contain? I currently take the shake 30 minutes after my workout and it is straight whey protien (Isopure) 50 grams, low carb. Thanks.

I usually start knocking mine back about 30-45 minutes after. I also throw in some flax meal, a bit of oatmeal and a banana along with the whey.

High intensity interval training. And a good way to find stuff like that it to press "ctrl + find" then type in the word you are looking for, to see if it is already answered.

Good Day, I am Jomari.. 21.
I am 5' 9" 224lbs. This may seem to be high for my height, but I am also built wide.
The thing I am trying to become clear on is the muscle burning and fat. Is this a good assumption technically:

if I work out harder for muscle gains while maintaining my caloric diet, it will natural utilize my fat to build the muscle thereby, possibly, maintaining my weight, but decreasing my fat?

Or will it just build muscle beneath my fat, making me an even wider guy?
I ask this because I can see my abdominal muscles through the sheet of fat. The insulation of fat and side handles are what bothers me.

I dont care about my weight, but about the overall look of my body

If you are going to give up if you do not get really fast results, then you should just give up now and not waste any ones time.

Their point is that you are not willing to do what it takes to get fast results, let alone regular results from what it sounds like.

Won't give up beer = won't get fast results.
Gives up quick = won't get regular results.

Speaking of HIIT, is it "safe" to do it 4-6 days a week? That's the only kind that doesn't bore me to tears.

Start with once or twice a week, then in a few weks maybe three...some people only do HIIT and others think it is too high impact to do every session. I think if you ease into the volume you should be fine, especially if it the only type of cardio you like.

Hey everyone, well im new i guess you can say im a begginer, and that, uhm i have gained wait, well a bit,i am 16 years old five 5,9 and 113,i was scouted to be a runway model but i have other issues that contradict that,my waist seems to carry all the fat, even though i am skinny and i have a fast metabolism i would like to make it faster, and i would like to loose all that fat,the extra fat, that isn't needed especially off my waist,i understand the importance of nutrition and that, but i need a bit of help.my goals are to become a professional soccer player and an Olympic track/soccer star, but i still want to be a runway model,i just don't know what to do? i need to loose all the unhealthy fat that I've gained from eating enormous amounts of junk food and sweets,i also messed up my sleep cycle so i guess that makes things a little harder i think that kind of like messed up my metabolism.anyways what should i do? and eat? and isn't it true that the amount of calories you consume doesn't matter, its what you consume to attain those calories?

Hey guys. I have a friend who I bring to the gym with me, and he and I have been trying this whey protein; "Gold Standard". I only bought a small amount to see if I would be satisfied with the results. There's a catch though. I'm doing more of a cardio workout to burn fat, and my friend is doing more of a muscle building workout. He claims that I should still take this protein because it will help me lose weight and build lean muscle. I was under the impression that protein was more for body building. Is what he said true?

Protein builds muscle yes. but the more LEAN muscle you have the more cals it takes to keep you moving, meaning it will help you lose fat in the long run.

Here's my question: How do I fight the fatigue and muscle loss that's nagging me after two months of starting a workout routine?

I'm 32, an active duty Gunny in the Marine Corps and even though I've been plagued with a couple injuries and surgeries I have been able to stay in good shape. Usually 235lbs and 12-15% body fat at 6' 3".

I just recovered from a rib injury and hit the gym pretty hard around the holidays. I do 30-45 min of cardio in the am upon waking and then go to the gym at the end of my work day at 3pm (Mon-Fri). My diet is relatively good, only allowing myself one cheat day a week. I stay away from sweets and sodas. Drinking only water, milk and protein shakes.

I started to improve my overall fitness and body fat around the end of Feb beginning of March, but hit a wall about the second week of March....been tryin to recover ever since. I'm tired all of the time and I have to MAKE myself workout instead of being excited to. My gains in the weight room were climing and now I'm lifting half as much. It's very frustrating. I don't mean to write a novel, but I'm at a fork in the road and need a little direction. I've never had an issue with this since I'm normally in really good shape, but everything I've tried in the past to get there isn't working for me now.....any advice is welcomed!!! Thanks

Quoting from asimmer:

You lose muscle when you exercise too hard or too much, without supporting it nutritionally.

Exercising first thing in the morning has been shown to burn more calories the rest of the day in some studies, but other studies have contradicted those findings.
Many people have had success losing fat by doing cardio first thing in the morning - it does raise your metabolism first thing, and I think it becomes a habit easier when it is the first thing you do. When you wait until later to do your cardio it is easier to let things take priority over it and end up not doing it.
If it feels good and it seems to work for you, do it! It is a great way to start your day - thinkof how much you have accomplished, first thing in the morning you have already done more exercise than 60% of the population will do in their lifetime.
If you wake up hungry - as i do - have a small, light protein based meal - i found that convenience-wise a lowor no-carb protein shake was quick and i could drink it while i got my workout clothes on and go.

If you are a bodybuilder, concerned with losing muscle, take bbfit's advice - you could lose some mass.

If you find that you are tired all day after adding am cardio - it could be it just isn't for you. We all have the same basic components, but it is amazing how differently our bodies rspond to different routines.

remember to eat a good, balanced meal after your am cardio - get some glycogen into your muscles and give your body the protein it needs to prevent catabolism.

No matter what time of day you do cardio, you are burning calories, boosting your metabolism and helping prevent life-style related diseases while strengthening your heart and lungs - not a bad deal at any time of day!

And the intensity at which you do your cardio isn't as paramount as we used to think - yes, at lower-to-moderate intensity you tap more into bodyfat, but at higher or interval iuntensity you burn more total calories, which a percentage comes from fat, so either way you are doing good work.

remember not to overdo it and fatigue your heart!!! You will get better results if you increase your fitness level at a reasonable pace than if you wear yourslf out.

Good luck!

Hello All,
Wow... body builders lol. I am a short dumpy little thing! I am 43, 5'4 weight 162lbs. I have lost 16 lbs since mid February of this year.
About 3 weeks after my diet change in February I quit smoking & took up aerobics & muscle training (all in home).About a month ago I started jogging outside. I have lost mad inches & feel fantastic! I have been on a weight loss plataeu now for 5 weeks. I have just added interval training (1 week now) to my program (3 times a week - jog/run combo)to mix things up. Nothing. Can someone please help me? I can provide any further info that you may require to help me break this plateau... losing steam now it's been soooo long since I seen the scale move!
